About

Having started in September 2020, Cruising Freedom continues to grow in its mission to help individuals start sailing and enjoy the global cruising lifestyle. If your dream is to sail around the world, then this is the ultimate go-to resource.

We’re based on the Sunshine Coast in Australia, with immediate access to the popular cruising grounds of the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, Moreton Bay and the beautiful Gold Coast.

What We Do

This isn’t just another run-of-the-mill ‘review’ site about marine components. Instead, over the next several years, we aim to cover a lot of content including:

  • Information for coastal and bluewater cruisers
  • Popular boating and sailing terminology for beginners
  • Where to go sailing including popular destinations
  • The best accessories for sailing yachts and catamarans
  • Popular sailing YouTube channels and their stories
  • Incredible anchorages, marinas and destinations worth visiting
  • Reviews of popular sailing vessels for world cruising

We focus on sustainable wind power and we’re inspired by popular forums such as CruisersForum and YouTube channels such as SV Delos and Sailing La Vagabonde.

Our Founder

I’m Joshua Smith, an avid sailing enthusiast from Australia. Ever since I was in early high school, I had a dream of sailing around the world. My choice: A catamaran with the popular owner’s cabin. This was long before YouTube had even started.

Fast-forward to 2015 and I stumbled across both SV Delos and Riley and Elayna, and stuck to their popular videos ever since. Riley had a similar story to me and we happened to work in the same industry (mining) only several hours apart.

Today I’m working on my cruising fund through building real and sustainable businesses. CruisingFreedom.com is one example of the bigger picture but is my biggest passion.

You’ll find the Cruising Freedom Pinterest Board here which is full of inspiration from ourselves and other cruising blogs!

The Problem We Solve

The biggest problem with sailing around the world is both capital needed to purchase a new or near-new sailing vessel, and the cashflow necessary to fund your trip for months or years on end.

Fortunately, one of the best opportunities today is to build a portfolio of sustainable businesses and go cruising. 👍

In our experience, the best business model is the content model. Through owning a portfolio of websites, we’re able to create a remote income and continue our sailing adventures. Better yet, you won’t require a real-time presence which is especially important in countries where internet availability is limited.

In several years, we aim to create some high-quality training to help beginners get out there and go cruising. Until then, we’ll continue creating engaging and helpful content.

My Motto

I aim to serve those who wish to sail around the world yet lack the knowledge, know-how and skills needed to start sailing and fund their voyage. I’m not a big believer in the ‘go now’ philosophy or Instagram FOMO, instead choosing to focus upon building a solid and sustainable foundation first.

Once you have the fundamentals sorted, there shouldn’t be any reason why you can’t get yourself out there and cross the world’s oceans! I’m excited to continue the development of this resource and we’d love to have you along on the journey.

May your boat be leak free.
May your sails be in good repair.
May the winds be fair, the weather kind and
May your days be filled with the exquisite pleasure of new adventures, fabulous destinations and excellent friendship.

Fair winds and safe travels! Your best is yet to come in 2022 😃
