Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

Kristina’s Travels FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Tucana with registration SA53IS.

They have also sailed on S/V Jacana II.

Crew Members

John Tilley (age 33)

Kristina Costalos (age 31)

They have been together for 17 years but are NOT married.

They were from Melbourne and escaped due to the never-ending lockdowns in 2020. Prior to this, they grew up in Adelaide just like myself.

They have been featured on the news here:

The Boat

Kristina’s Travels owns a 2008 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 50DS.

Upgrades

They have upgraded their yacht with an autopilot and AIS.

Location

Their boat is currently in the Whitsundays. They have uploaded some older content:

Meanwhile, according to Instagram, they’ve headed to Europe to do some sailing.

Past Cruising

They have sailed from Sydney and throughout the Whitsundays.

Affording It

John was a pilot while Kristina was a TV news reporter.

They were making around $100,000/year each. With no kids, they are able to save up a ton to purchase their boat for $247,000 from Melbourne.

Net Worth

Kristina’s Travels has a net worth of $720,000.

This is a combination fo their boat value, personal investments and business income. They do make an income from YouTube.

Making Loot

They make $1,100/month through their channel by allowing ads to run on their channel.

They also use referral links to their camera and sailing gear to Amazon.

There are a ton of things they could do to monetize their channel so much more.

Collaborations

They haven’t really collaborated with other YouTube cruisers, but they are very similar to Sailing Ruby Rose.

Big Moments

Moments in their journey include being interviewed on the news, experiencing some tough storms and struggling with emotional challenges.

They actually inspected a boat in Brisbane (S/V Sabu) that they ultimately decided it wasn’t for them. An older gentleman bought it and yet, after 3 weeks of ownership, was demasted near Coffs Harbour.

See the story here:

Future Plans

They’re planning to take their yacht around the world.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn?

➜ Anyone can learn how to sail

➜ It’s OK to take 12 months off

➜ You don’t need much experience

➜ Work through the toughest of jobs

Most importantly, find a special mermaid to join you on the journey!

Conclusion

John and Kristina are so wonderful, and Kristina’s calming narration voice is based on her years of experience on Australian television networks.

It’s so refreshing to see someone semi-famous head out there and explore. Their story-telling is wonderful and I can’t wait to see more!
