Out Chasing Stars: How Can They Afford To Sail? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Out Chasing Stars for 2023.

Over the last 3 years, I have spent 39 hours on and off watching Out Chasing Stars on YouTube to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with David and Amy 😃 they are incredibly knowledgeable!)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Out Chasing Stars afforded their boat

➜ How they make an income on YouTube

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ How do they budget and can afford to keep sailing

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Out Chasing Stars FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Starry Horizons

Crew Members

David Alton (age 35)

Amy Alton (age 34)

They have been married for 12 years as of April 2022. Interestingly, it was Amy and Amy’s dad who got David into sailing, not the other way around as is commonly the case 🙂

The Boat

Out Chasing Stars from YouTube owns a 2014 Fountain Pajot Helia 44 (otherwise known as an FP Helia 44-foot)

Upgrades

They have upgraded their catamaran with several things, including:

➜ Marriage savers (wireless headphones for getting in and out of marinas)

➜ Medical preparations including a full-fledged first aid kit

➜ Swapping from AGM to Lithium batteries

➜ Cruisewater watermaker to top up the tanks

Location

Out Chasing Stars is in the United States.

They have been filming a ton of excellent and helpful videos lately:

Past Cruising

Out Chasing Stars have already circumnavigated the world (40,000nm) with their catamaran which made many haters go silent.

After all, David and Amy chose a boat that’s designed for the charter market rather than bluewater cruising, and yet, David and Amy made it happen with some trial and error.

They didn’t consider a Seawind catamaran as they wanted to start their journey either in Europe or North America, whereas Seawind is based in Australia while their factory is based in Vietnam.

Starry Horizons is a good compromise – as far as catamarans go, she’s a bit on the slower performance side. But, compared to our cruising friends in monohulls, we do pretty well, as we average about 6.75 knots on passage.

Affording It

David and Amy are so young – how did they afford to buy an expensive catamaran? Well, David worked in tech and Amy worked hard in her business which she eventually sold.

They saved hard, sold their house/cars, and took off for a trip of a lifetime!

Net Worth

Out Chasing Stars is worth $1,200,000 based on their boat value and personal possessions.

Making Loot

They make an income through many sources, including:

➜ Using Amazon affiliate links on their channel and website

➜ Running ads on their YouTube videos and website

➜ Freelancing and consulting with other sailors/travelers

➜ Selling their own merchandise

In total, they make around $6,400/month on their channel which was enough to keep them going through the several years they have been sailing. Their budget was only around $4,500/month and recently switched from a meat-heavy diet and to a mostly vegetarian diet.

Collaborations

I have seen Out Chasing Stars on these channels:

➜ 22 South

Big Moments

What happened during their global circumnavigation?

A lot, actually:

➜ A seriously rough passage to New Zealand

➜ Finding an abandoned 5-star resort

➜ Getting hauled out in NZ and discovering damage

They didn’t get robbed or encounter pirates. After all, the world is a seriously safe place!

Future Plans

Now that they’ve sailed around the world, where are they going next? Well, they plan to continue sailing and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this young couple?

➜ If you can…go now! Your career can wait

➜ Cruising as a couple is a 50/50 responsibility

➜ Plan ahead but allow flexibility to change

➜ A charter vessel can certainly sail the world

And don’t forget to smile!

Conclusion

Of all the sailing YouTubers I’ve watched, David and Amy inspire me the most. They’re young like me and find a way to make their dream come to life…long before they turned 40.

I hope they’ve equally inspired you too. If you’re not in the position that they were in and are looking for an opportunity, well…
