Everything You Always Wanted To Know
Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom
This is the definitive guide on RAN Sailing for 2023.
Over the last 3 years, I have spent 57 hours watching and researching everything I could about RAN Sailing to learn more about their channel.
(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Malin and Johan’s story 😃)
If you wanted to know:
➜ How RAN Sailing afforded their boat
➜ How they make their money today
➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades
➜ If RAN Sailing has met up with others
➜ How you can start crossing oceans
Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.
Before we start, a quick introduction from me…
The Cruising Freedom Author
Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.
I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.
A business model which can allow me to:
➜ Own a catamaran debt-free
➜ Go for weeks without WIFI
➜ Create semi-passive income
➜ Inspire others to dream big
But more on that later… 🙂
RAN Sailing FAQs (April 2023)
S/V RAN II
Johan Hammarlund (age 44)
Malin Löf (age 34)
Yes, they are 10 years apart in age! They’re both from Sweden
Vera (aged 2) is their daughter. Will they have another baby in 2022? *Watch this space* 😉
RAN Sailing has a 1988 Najad 440, but they are now building a new boat:
They have done a ton of upgrades including:
➜ Iridium Go! and Spot 3 Satellite GPS
➜ Raymarine e7D Cartography device
➜ Upgraded electric toilets
They don’t have a watermaker on this current boat, but they did have one on their previous one.
RAN Sailing is currently in Mayreau, which is in the Grenadines.
This is reflected in both their Instagram and YouTube channels, making their content up to date.
RAN Sailing has explored:
➜ Europe and the East Atlantic
➜ The Caribbean and The Pacific
They have also focused a lot on boat work.
Did Johan and Malin come from rich European families? Clearly not. They simply worked hard to afford their dream, and their yacht is reasonably affordable.
Given the value of their yacht and business income, RAN Sailing’s net worth is $572,000.
Their income is made through:
➜ YouTube ad revenue
➜ Their loyal Patreon subscribers
➜ Amazon Associates links
➜ The occasional PayPal donation
This brings their monthly income from YouTube to $7,200/month combined.
Some interesting moments in their journey include:
➜ Getting border at sea
➜ Sending out a PAN PAN PAN
➜ Having a 10kg heavy hatch falling on Malin’s big toe (ouch!)
➜ Giving birth AND buying a boat in the very same week!
Much of their best sailing happened before their daughter Vega came into the world, although the family does plan to resume more challenging sails now that Vera is growing up fast.
Where to next? It’s likely they’ll be exploring The Pacific.
What can we learn from this beautiful couple?
➜ It’s possible to sail with a young child
➜ Buy the best boat that you can afford
➜ Be genuine and avoid the bikini-bait
➜ Don’t be afraid to let go of the lines
RAN Sailing has become successful on YouTube by simply creating genuine content that takes its audience (including myself 🙂) on a journey to beautiful places.
Their editing is simple and welcoming, and they’ve been able to derive a considerable income online.
