This is the definitive guide on Ryan And Sophie Sailing for 2022.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Ryan And Sophie’s channel 😃)

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Ryan And Sophie Sailing FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Polar Seal whose home port is Stockholm, Sweden.

Crew Members

Ryan Ellison (age 29)

Sophie Darsy (age 28)

Ryan is from the United States while Sophie is French, and they met in Sweden in March 2015 and 7+ years later, they’re still thriving!

If you want to see Sophie speaking French, then this is beautiful:

The Boat

Ryan and Sophie Sailing own a 2007 Beneteau Oceanis 40 owner’s version. This is slightly smaller than the first yacht Riley had from Sailing La Vagabonde, but it’s still quite roomy inside as they only have 2 cabins.

Upgrades

Upgrades to Polar Seal include:

➜ 400W walk-on solar panels

➜ New navigation systems

➜ New 12v system and lithium batteries

➜ Brand new sails with blue water upgrades

➜ Their own DIY Watermaker

Fun fact: Sophie broke the exhaust cover on the aft of the boat. 😄

Location

According to Instagram and YouTube, they are at the Annapolis Boat Show:

This means they are reasonably up to date with their videos.

Ryan has recently done a solo sail across the Atlantic as you’ve seen on YouTube, and they raised $1,000 for the U.N. through sales of their Explore Humanity T-shirts.

Past Cruising

They have sailed in:

➜ The Atlantic

➜ The Mediterranean

➜ The United States

Every passage and destination has been done together, apart from the Atlantic crossing.

Their next destination is the Pacific starting in late 2022 and going throughout 2023.

Affording It

Ryan and Sophie aren’t rich but without kids, they were able to save enough to purchase their boat for cash.

Net Worth

YouTubers can do quite well for themselves.

As of 2023, Ryan and Sophie Sailing have a net worth of $725,000 US dollars based on their yacht value and business.

This allows them the freedom to roam free.

Making Loot

They monetize their channel quite well, and make money from:

➜ Amazon Associates links in their description

➜ Referrals to Catamaran Supply

➜ Running YouTube advertisements

➜ Selling their own Polar Seal apparel

With this, they make around $6,500/month on YouTube which is enough to keep the adventures going.

Collaborations

I have seen them on other YouTube channels including:

Sailing Millennial Falcon

➜ 59 Degrees North podcast (one of my favorites and definitely worth listening to!)

Big Moments

Moments in their journey include:

➜ Deciding against crossing the Atlantic in a motor vessel (a very sound decision!)

➜ Ryan crossed the Atlantic solo from Lanzarote, Spain to the Canary Islands

➜ Encountering a migrant raft between the Canary Islands and Africa

This is the most emotional sailing video I’ve ever seen:

Future Plans

Where to next? They haven’t been quite clear but it’s likely they’ll be heading for the South Pacific and towards Australia. We can’t wait!

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this powerful sailing couple?

➜ Choose an owner’s version layout over a charter version

➜ Don’t be afraid to cross oceans solo (providing you’re very well prepared and experienced, of course!)

➜ Aim to monetize your channel as best as you can

➜ Working remotely is very much possible

And plan ahead when taking risks!

Conclusion

I can’t wait to see what’s on the horizon for this YouTube channel. I’ve certainly enjoyed watching them so far and Sophie’s accent is beautiful!
