Sailing Kawai: What Happened To Them on YouTube? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Sailing Kawai for 2023.

Over the last couple of years, I have spent countless hours watching and researching everything I could about Sailing Kawai to learn more about their cruising story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with my fellow Australians from Sailing Kawai 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Sailing Kawai afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ Where they went and why they haven’t uploaded to YouTube recently

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Sailing Kawai FAQs (January 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Kawai

Crew Members

Jason Stephens (age 37)

Tracey Stephens (age 36)

They were inspired by Laura Decker’s documentary and the other by Chasing Bubbles. They watched SV Delos for quite a few seasons, much like myself.

The Boat

Sailing Kawai owns a 2013 Hanse 445 which is a 45-foot yacht. They also have a tender with an outboard.

Upgrades

Some basic upgrades to their boat include:

➜ B&G Zeus 3

➜ New Mantus anchor

Location

They haven’t uploaded to YouTube for a while, and their last-known location was Marmaris Yacht Marina.

UPDATE: They are finally back on YouTube!

I checked on their Instagram accounts and they’ve returned to the Gold Coast to be with their kids.

They may still have more videos to publish (some from 2.5 years ago!) and will return to sailing full-time.

Update: Their adventures in Europe have begun! 😀

Past Cruising

Kawai mostly sailed in the Mediterranean but they flew back to Australia when the Pandemic began.

Affording It

Both Jason and Tracey worked pretty hard to get their yacht. It wasn’t easy but through working long hours and investing wisely, they were able to pay cash for their boat.

They sold their house, their car and most of their personal possessions to make the dream happen. They didn’t have any kids which made things easier.

Net Worth

As of 2023, Sailing Kawai has a net worth $820,000.

This is based upon the value of their yacht and personal assets.

Making Loot

While they were on YouTube, they hardly made any money at all. They certainly weren’t doing this for the money and relied upon investments and personal cash to fund their adventures.

Collaborations

I didn’t see them on any other YouTube channels within the sailing community. If you have – please let me know so I can update this. 🙂

Big Moments

They had a pretty enjoyable journey and didn’t encounter any problems, nor did they create any click-bait content for the views. They’re probably one of the most down-to-earth creators I’ve come across here at Cruising Freedom, and trust me…I’ve come across many!

Future Plans

Where to next? They are hopefully heading back to Europe soon to continue the journey and eventually find themselves in the South Pacific.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this extremely friendly Australian couple?

➜ Buy the boat that suits your cruising grounds

➜ You can monetize your channel so much more

➜ Be willing to do some of the boat work yourself

➜ She might be more excited than you are… 😅

(I say that because Tracey was keener than Jason initially)

More importantly, it’s best to take it easy out there on the water and simply live in the moment.

Conclusion

I can’t wait to see more content hit their channel in the coming months! This dry spell has been killing me.

In the meantime…
