Everything You Always Wanted To Know
Joshua Smith
Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom
This is the definitive guide on Sailing Malou for 2023.
Over the last several years, I have spent many hours watching and researching everything I could about Sailing Malou to learn more about his story.
(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Gustav and his adventures 😃)
If you wanted to know:
➜ How Gustav from Sailing Malou afforded his boat
➜ How he makes his money today
➜ What boat does he have and its upgrades
➜ When did Lynn separate from Gustav
➜ How you can start crossing oceans
Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.
Before we start, a quick introduction from me…
The Cruising Freedom Author
Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.
I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.
A business model which can allow me to:
➜ Own a catamaran debt-free
➜ Go for weeks without WIFI
➜ Create semi-passive income
➜ Inspire others to dream big
But more on that later… 🙂
Sailing Malou FAQs (April 2022)
Boat Name
S/V Stelle
Crew Members
Gustav (age 33)
He is originally from Sweden.
Gustav previously sailed with his girlfriend Lynn, but they separated in late 2019. This is the video announcing the breakup:
Prior to this, Sailor Malou used to be called Ocean Around. Gustav changed the name of the channel after the separation.
There was another (very beautiful) girl called Evelina from Sweden who joined for a short time too.
The Boat
His boat is a custom build.
Upgrades
He’s had to fit a new mast and electronics.
Location
Malou is currently in Tromsø, Norway. It’s from here that he can see the Northern Lights.
It does appear that he’s up to date on videos.
Past Cruising
He has sailed mostly through the Mediterranean.
Affording It
Gustav is a budget-backpacker and didn’t have much money. After all, he only paid $2,000 for his yacht.
Most of the work has been done by himself to keep his costs down.
Net Worth
As of 2022, Sailing Malou has a net worth of $95,000.
Making Loot
Gustav makes his money through Patreon and running ads on his channel.
Collaborations
I haven’t seen him featured on other channels, but if you’re looking for similar creators, then check out:
➜ Erik Aandereaa (he sails solo in cold climates)
➜ Sam Holmes Sailing (he sails solo in warmer climates)
They did anchor next to Sailing La Vagabonde in one episode while they were in Antigua:
Big Moments
He’s sailed in the snow, in the tropics and came across some sunken boats. He’s been lucky enough to (temporarily) find someone who wanted to share the journey.
Future Plans
Gustav is planning to stay in Europe for now.
Key Takeaways
What can we learn from this ambitious young man?
➜ Use the resources you have
➜ Be willing to explore today
➜ Find a supportive partner
➜ Work through the challenges
Most importantly – have a ton of fun!
Conclusion
I really enjoy seeing how resourceful Gustav has been on his cruising journey. He just seems to be able to make things work and keep a level head despite the challenges.
I do look forward to see his journey continue to unfold.
