Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

But more on that later… 🙂

Sailing Popao FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

Crew Members

Jessie Cripps (age 34)

The Boat

Sailing Popao has a 2006 Easy 37ft (11.3m) catamaran which is based in Australia and was designed by Peter Snell.

These boats are quite popular here in Australia for coastal cruising and can sometimes be seen in the South Pacific. They’re light, affordable and reasonably easy to sail short-handed.

In addition, they have a 2020 Classic 340 Highfield tender that’s paired with a 15hp Mercury outboard.

Upgrades

While they have a cheaper catamaran, they have upgraded some elements of their boat, including:

➜ B&G Zeus 3 Chart Plotter

➜ Watermaker Man Desalinator TWM 80

➜ 2x Trina SplitMaxx 330 Watt Solar Panels

➜ Victron 100/50 MPPT Solar Controller

➜ Rocna 20 anchor

As with any boat, they are constantly replacing stuff.

Location

They are currently in the Whitsundays and won’t be leaving anytime soon.

Past Cruising

Most of their sailing has been in Australia and Tonga.

Affording It

The crew from Sailing Popao has just worked hard over the years and without kids, were able to buy their boat for cash around 2 years ago.

Net Worth

You don’t need to be rich to enjoy the cruising lifestyle.

As of 2023, Sailing Popao has a net worth of $370,000 Australian dollars.

This includes the value of their boat and online business income.

Making Loot

So then, how are they making money?

➜ They sell Sailing Popao merch

➜ YouTube runs ads on their videos

➜ They use links to brand sponsors

Sailing Popao is only making around $2,900/month on YouTube but that’s enough to sustain their cruising dreams.

Collaborations

I haven’t seen them hanging out with any other YouTubers, but would love to see them with Sailing Nandji who are now back in Australia. The perfect collab!

Big Moments

Someone once crashed into their boat:

Apart from that, it’s been relatively quiet travels.

Future Plans

Their first plan is to go around Australia and they may then head into SE Asia.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this awesome couple?

➜ Living on a boat is easier than we think

➜ Liveaboards can do catch and cook

➜ It’s best to have a very supportive partner

➜ Buying a cheaper catamaran is a wise idea

And of course, keep your expenses low so you can start living your dreams sooner!

Conclusion

Sailing Popao is a wonderful couple that inspires many of us in Australia (and abroad!) to pursue our own freedom.

I have really enjoyed watching their adventures on YouTube and I’m certainly keen to see them reach the Kimberly region of Western Australia.

Until then…
