Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Wind Hippie Sailing for 2022.

Over the last 3 years, I have spent way too many hours watching and researching everything I could about Wind Hippie Sailing to learn more about her sailing story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Holly Martin 😃 She is socially awkward just like me!)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Wind Hippie Sailing afforded her boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ If Holly Martin is single or has a boyfriend

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Wind Hippie Sailing FAQs (June 2022)

Boat Name

S/V Gecko

Crew Members

Holly Martin (age 28)

She is single and is sailing the world by herself, although sometimes has friends join her on the journey. Her sister Tish does some of the video editing from her home so Holly can get on with sailing around the world.

The Boat

Holly from Wind Hippie Sailing has a Gride 27 double-ender sloop that was made almost 40 years ago.

Upgrades

She has hardly done any upgrades.

Her boat has no fridge which explains why she’s often diving for dinner! She also has no outboard for her dinghy and uses a windvane for self-steering. She’s ambitious as she is committed to her journey.

That said, she has built her own dodger and bimini, installed more solar and batteries and

Location

Wind Hippie Sailing is currently in Raiatea, French Polynesia. She’s just hauled her boat out to have some work done to the hull.

This is one of Holly’s most recent videos:

Past Cruising

She is no stranger to danger (bad dad joke…last one I promise!), but Holly has explored with her boat in:

➜ Antigua

➜ Galapagos

➜ Fiji

➜ Marquesas

As I mentioned above, she’s now in French Polynesia and will stay for a few weeks.

Affording It

Where did Holly get the money? She saved hard after working several years in casual jobs. Her boat only cost her around $5,000 and she repaired most of it herself being as resourceful as she is.

Net Worth

Wind Hippie Sailing is worth $120,000. She isn’t rich but she’s one of the happiest people I’ve come across in the sailing community. Despite the conditions, she avoids the drama and simply gets on with the job. Compare that to the popular channels and we have a diamond in the rough!

Making Loot

Holly is definitely running her channel as more of a hobby rather than a business, but still makes around $700/month on YouTube. This is made through:

➜ Running ads on her channel

➜ Doing talks on sailing in person

She could be doing a lot more but perhaps hasn’t worked out how to do it all yet.

Collaborations

Who has she been with? Who is that guy on the boat? Well, that’s her friend and she is definitely still single despite them getting along so well!

She hasn’t really collaborated with any other YouTubers but I would LOVE to see her sail with Sam Holmes.

If there are two channels that Holly has strong synergy with, then it’s White Spot Pirates and Unforgettable Sailing. I highly recommend checking out those two channels if you enjoy the sheer empowerment that comes with watching women sailing by themselves.

Big Moments

Given that I’ve been watching her sailing journey for a while, I’ve noted several moments during that time:

➜ She ran aground once (making her a true sailor!)

➜ She has lost her engine on more than one occasion

➜ Fixing up her sails and anchors a few times

She hasn’t created any drama and has simply experienced the raw nature of living on a sailboat.

Future Plans

Holly plans to continue to sail the world and isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In 10 years she’ll be still sailing the world. Where will YOU be?

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this gorgeous YouTuber?

➜ Buy a simple boat and go now

➜ Don’t worry about judgment

➜ Women can sail solo quite easily

➜ Be prepared to do your own boat work

And of course, simply be real with everyone!

Conclusion

Holly has already spent more than half her life floating on a sailboat. I can’t wait to see what’s in store next….and here in Australia, we’ll welcome her with open arms!
