Living With The Tide: They’re Missing Off YouTube? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Living With The Tide for 2023.

Over the last 2 years, I have spent a lot of hours watching and researching everything I could about Living With The Tide because their ketch really fascinated me.

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Living With The Tide afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ If they’re still sailing and returning to YouTube

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Living With The Tide FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Morna

Crew Members

Matt (age 27) and Paige Grogan (age 22) from the United Kingdom.

The Boat

Living With The Tide has a 1920 Dickies of Tarbert Gaff Ketch that’s 61-feet long. Yes, their sailboat is more than 100 years old and yet, it’s still sailing strong! You can find more details about the ship on the Old Gaffers Association website.

They also have a tender that comes with a paddle. No modern outboard for these ambitious sailors!

That said, their ship does have a Volvo Penta diesel for navigating in and out of marinas, anchorages and boat yards.

Upgrades

They have upgraded their yacht extensively as you can tell by their YouTube and Instagram channels.

Location

What happened to Living With The Tide? Did they break up and stop YouTube entirely? Or give up on the project? Or just run out of cash?

This was their last video:

If you do have more information, I’d like to know. I messaged them on Instagram but they didn’t respond.

It appears they are just doing some extensive boat restorations and will return to making YouTube videos again in the near future. Yes, they ARE still together. 😃

It’s been a while…… actually its been longer than a while and for a long time we didn’t really have an update for you guys.

As you can imagine COVID put us in a position where we didn’t know what we were going to do. For over a year we couldn’t go to the marina to work on Morna and so she just sat there drying out. We worried about what state she would be in by the time we finally were able to get back to her. When the restrictions were finally eased we were able to move morna down to Fairlie Quay marina, ready to start the long restoration process.

Paige – early 2022

Living With The Tide are currently in Fairlie Quay Marina.

Past Cruising

It’s not all boat work with these two. They have explored:

➜ The Caribbean

➜ Madeira and The Canary Islands

➜ UK, Ireland and Europe

➜ The Mediterranean

They have even done a crossing of the Atlantic with their mighty ship

Affording It

They were able to pay about $50,000 for their classic yacht which came from personal savings.

Net Worth

Living With The Tide has a net worth of $410,000.

Making Loot

They don’t make all that much on YouTube, choosing to simply share their renovations and travel. They both receive a small pension from the UK government that keeps them going.

Collaborations

I haven’t seen them on any other channel. They’ve very unique and one of a kind, so it’s hard to compare them with anyone else either.

Big Moments

They have so far:

➜ Run aground a couple of times

➜ Struggled to find marinas that can handle a boat their size

➜ Dodged a few container ships

➜ Accidently anchored without realizing

Future Plans

I’m not sure what 2022 holds for these two. Much like you, I’d just like to see them return to YouTube!

Key Takeaways

We can learn so much from these two:

➜ Big, tall, old ships can definitely cross oceans

➜ Don’t be afraid to be super ambitious

➜ Find someone that’ll support your wanderlust

Conclusion

I must admit – I do miss Matt and Paige. It was only the other day that I realized that they haven’t been uploading for a while.

They are now active again on Instagram but not on YouTube. I’d love to see them return to creating their epic videos and soon after, continue their great journey around the world with their classic ship.

Australia will welcome them with open arms. 😊

Distant Shores TV: What Happened To Paul and Sheryl? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Distant Shores TV for 2023.

Over the last 10 years, I have spent 57 hours watching and researching everything I could about Distant Shores TV to learn more about their story.

They are, after all, the original cruising video creators looonggg before the YouTubers showed up. Many consider them to be the pioneers of sailing videos:

I’ve personally not only learned a ton from their videos but got hooked on the cruising lifestyle.

If you wanted to know:

➜ What sailing boats Paul and Sheryl have had

➜ How they made their money to keep sailing

➜ What they’re sailing today and its upgrades

➜ If they’re still filming their TV shows

➜ What kind of boat is Distant Shores #4

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

But more on that later… 🙂

Distant Shores FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

Distant Shores 4 doesn’t have a name, and they sold their previous boat a little while ago.

This is their ‘goodbye’ video:

Crew Members

Paul Shard (age 56)

Sheryl Shard (age 56)

They have been together for 30+ years having grown up in school today. In their 20’s they began sailing and never looked back, and never had children along the way either.

The Boat

Distant Shores recently sold their yacht which was a Southerly 480, also known as Distant Shores 3.

They are currently sailing on friends’ boats and test-sailing certain designs with other cruising couples.

Distant Shores 4 is launching in 2023 and will be an Orion 49 yacht with 3 cabins and 2 heads. Much like their previous 3 boats, they have chosen a monohull instead of a catamaran and have opted for an aluminum hull.

Upgrades

Paul and Sheryl haven’t really shared much about the new boat build. Once I have some more information about their upgrades, I’ll definitely be sharing it here.

Location

While waiting for their current boat to be built, Paul and Sheryl are in the Caribbean helping fellow cruisers.

Past Cruising

I typically like to share where certainly YouTube cruising channels have explored so you can see if they have been to some of the destinations on your bucket list. However, Paul and Sheryl have practically been around the world multiple times and stayed at just about every well-known cruising spot.

Affording It

Paul and Sheryl started out with a simple boat after a few years of working full-time jobs. They kept things simple along the way and managed a tight budget.

Net Worth

Distant Shores TV has a net worth of $1,100,000 as of 2022.

Making Loot

How did they afford to sail when they started at a time without ways to work remotely? Well:

➜ They would find odd jobs in ports

➜ They learned how to fix sails for others

➜ They wrote books and articles for sailing magazines

Once their name and stories became popular, they then started documenting their journey and selling the licensing rights to their TV show to stations around the world. It was a hit in the 1990s as they did all the filming mostly by themselves.

Collaborations

Have they been on any other YouTube channels? Absolutely! I have seen them with:

SV Delos

They also had the Windtraveler family from S/V Asante on their boat.

Note: Windtraveler isn’t sailing anymore. Brittany and Scott divorced in 2019 due to the stress of building a business, losing their business (hurricane), and raising 3 little girls in the British Virgin Islands without any family support.

I was a long-term fan of their blog.

Big Moments

What a journey they have certainly have had!

In the last 40 years:

➜ They have been arrested on more than one occasion

➜ Being true sailors, they have run aground more than once

➜ They have gotten themselves beached many times

➜ They have also published the longest-running cruising vlog that I have ever seen

Future Plans

Will they be stopping anytime soon? Nope! The sea is their home and there is so much to learn.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from these two wonderful humans?

➜ You can live for decades on the ocean

➜ Don’t be afraid to be humble out there

➜ If you can’t afford a catamaran, get a yacht

➜ Be willing to do your own boat work

And stop messing around, as we only live once!

Conclusion

Paul and Sheryl have inspired many of us (myself included, and for a very long time!) to explore the world through the winds in our sails.

While their popularity has waned over the years as other channels have taken over, they still remain true to their mission to help other yachtsmen to explore new passages, anchorages and regions of the world.

I certainly can’t wait to see what Distant Shores IV will become, packed with 32 years of experiences behind them.

The Daley Adventure: No More YouTube? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on The Daley Adventure for 2023.

Over the last 4.5 years, I had spent many hours watching and researching everything I could about The Daley Adventure to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really got *that* obsessed with David and Hayley 😃 after all, I was actually in the market for the same catamaran they owned)

If you’re super curious to know:

➜ How The Daley Adventure afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ Why have they been missing from YouTube for 12+ months

➜ How you can start crossing oceans just like they did

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Daley Adventure FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Susan Ann II

Crew Members

David Dobson (age 43)

Hayley Dobson (age 42)

Missing from YT

Why has The Daley Adventure not been uploaded to YouTube for a while? It’s because they now have 3 children (Ayla and Cooper, plus a newborn) and Dave is often working away in Portugal while they live in Dubai.

This was their last video which was published around 2 years ago:

The Boat

Before selling the catamaran, The Daley Adventure owned a 2017 Lagoon 250S.

They shipped a ton of their gear from the UK to the Lagoon factory in France.

Upgrades

Dave got to work pretty quickly and modified their boat with:

➜ Their own microwave

➜ Underwater lights

➜ Washing machine

Past Cruising

Before becoming parents, they explored in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Mediterranean.

Affording It

Dave and Hayley worked hard but didn’t have enough cash. They had to take out a bank loan to purchase their boat. Financing options appear to be more readily available in some countries.

Net Worth

The Daley Adventure is worth $980,000.

Making Loot

They didn’t monetize their channel at all, despite putting so much effort into their video production.

Collaborations

I don’t recall seeing them on other cruising channels, but perhaps I’m mistaken? If I am – please reach out so I can update this article. Plus – who knows, we might see them on other channels in the near future.

While their boat has been sold, I’m sure they’re itching to go sailing again now that the kids are getting a little easier.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this stunningly beautiful British couple?

➜ Sail before you have kids

➜ Be willing to take risks

➜ Make the most of today

➜ Don’t have any regrets

And of course, find a partner who’ll 100% support your dreams.

Conclusion

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching them and their journey on the Lagoon. Perhaps they’ll become like The Sailing Family and pick up sailing again soon. I know that Hayley is tired of Dave constantly flying away.

➜ Suffering an exploding propeller

➜ Getting smashed by a squall

➜ Being adrift in a Hurricane

➜ Watching 11 boats drag anchor

➜ Suffering a cracked hull

➜ Joel’s friends’ boat demasted

➜ Almost abandoning hope more than once

It’s been quite the journey but they keep smiling!

Future Plans

➜ Learn through real sailing experiences

➜ Buy a cheap boat that can sail just fine

➜ Be willing to take some calculated risks

➜ Find a partner who’s happy to sail with you

And of course, have a ton of fun!

Conclusion

I’ve been watching them for a while and there’s never a dull moment. Joel and Michal share many of the same values as myself, and I’ll be tuning in for years to come!

Sailing Joy FAQs (January 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Sailing Joy

Crew Members

Ed Freitas (age 37)

Patricia Freitas (age 33)

They are a couple-crew although they have guests joining often. I’ve noticed that 90% of people who go cruising are couples rather than big groups or solo sailors.

I noticed their channel has the same intro music as Sailing Ruby Rose.

The Boat

Sailing Joy has a 2020 Lagoon 46. Previously they had a Lagoon 42 and upgraded for the space and stability. While it’s only an additional 4-feet, it increased their living space by 30% with the covered flybridge deck.

Upgrades

What upgrades have they made to their catamaran?

➜ B&G Zeus 3 Navigation Pack (Chartplotter and AIS)

➜ Garmin In Reach and Iridium Go

➜ Multiple fridges and freezers

➜ Rocna 40kg anchor (they kept their original 25kg anchor which became a spare)

They effectively have a floating condo that isn’t much different from a house, and that’s what they were aiming for.

Location

Sailing Joy is currently in Italy.

Past Cruising

They have been sailing for a couple of years, and have explored the United States and the Mediterranean.

Affording It

Did they come from rich parents? Maybe, but Ed has built successful businesses and made some seriously smart investments to purchase their Lagoon 46.

Net Worth

Sailing Joy is worth $1,900,000 based on the value of their catamaran and personal savings.

Making Loot

They make a part-time income on YouTube through:

➜ Donations via Patreon and PayPal

➜ Running Amazon links in their description

➜ Brand sponsorships and referral links (Huusk Knives Japan is one example)

➜ They also allow ads on their YouTube channel

In total, they make around $4,600/month and this will probably increase through 2022.

Collaborations

They are only a small YouTube channel and at this time, they haven’t been featured on any other channels.

Big Moments

While they only recently started, some interesting things have occurred:

➜ Witnessing a fire in their marina

➜ Having their boat delivery postponed

➜ Seeing killer whales attack sail boats

Future Plans

Where to next? They’re going to explore Europe before heading for the BVI!

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this beautiful couple?

➜ It’s OK to buy an expensive boat (screw the haters!)

➜ A flybridge cruiser is a lot of fun if you can afford it

➜ Don’t be afraid to upgrade your boat’s electronics

➜ Find a beautiful partner to join you on the journey

They are clearly on a mission and make no apologies. I can compare them with

Conclusion

I enjoy supporting smaller channels and Sailing Joy is no exception. They haven’t been around for all that long, and I can’t wait to see where their catamaran will take them in years to come!

Sailing Life on Jupiter: Learn More About Princess (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Sailing Life on Jupiter for 2023.

Over the last 3 years, I have spent many hours watching and researching everything I could about Sailing Life on Jupiter to learn more about their story and their unique boat.

(You could definitely say I’m a little obsessed with Jamie and Princess 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Life on Jupiter afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ Where is Princess from and does she have a sister? 😉

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Sailing Life on Jupiter FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Jupiter²

Crew Members

Jamie (age 38) who is originally from Australia.

Princess (age 32) who is originally from Manila, Philippines. She was a singer in China.

I couldn’t find their last names anywhere, but I do know that Princess is her real name.

They met at a hotel in China (2018) and quit their jobs in early 2019 to sail around the world.

The Boat

Sailing Life on Jupiter has a 2019 Mumby Cyber 48 catamaran.

Unlike many YouTubers, their choice of a catamaran is quite unconventional. Jamie has owned boats before so he was after a particular type of build.

It was designed by Tim Mumby from Australia who has a small-scale builder that most of us haven’t heard of, but the design is as smart as it is functional.

Upgrades

What work have they done to make their catamaran ocean-capable? Quite a bit actually:

➜ They have upgraded their solar panels

➜ Jamie created a DIY watermaker similar to what Sailing Sunday did

➜ They had to fix their furler from the screecher

They also had to demast their catamaran to do the ICW. This is because their mast is higher than the height clearance of 56 feet.

Location

Sailing Jupiter is in Panama.

They are currently around a few months behind on their videos.

Past Cruising

Over these last 3 years, they have sailed in:

➜ Africa

➜ United States

➜ SE Asia

➜ The Caribbean

They are no strangers to crossing oceans, having now done the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Affording It

Jamie worked hard for years as a pilot and saved up enough to purchase his first boat, which he flipped and eventually purchased his dreamboat in the Philippines.

Princess equally worked hard and traveled to foreign countries and entertained guests at hotels with the beautiful sound of her voice.

Princess was already keen to get out of her daily grind so the timing was perfect. Together, they hired a boat builder to construct their catamaran and the rest is history.

Net Worth

Sailing Life on Jupiter has a net worth of $450,000.

Making Loot

Jamie talks more about the journey to becoming a world cruiser and digital nomad here:

They treat their YouTube channel as an online business, but only make around $1,400/month by:

➜ Running ads on their channel occasionally

➜ Getting donations via Patreon and PayPal

➜ Selling their own Life on Jupiter merchandise

Unfortunately, they don’t use affiliate links to Amazon or eBay, referral links to other sailing suppliers nor do they accept sponsorships. They could potentially double their income overnight if they took upon some of these strategies. I’d certainly support them if they did this as I already do by watching many of their episodes.

Collaborations

I haven’t seen them on any other YouTube channels. However, there is another Australian who sails with his Asian wife called Sailing Luckyfish although they haven’t uploaded for a while.

Big Moments

Memorable moments in their YouTube journey include:

➜ Getting stuck on a collision course with oil rigs

➜ Having a big drama on Jupiter through almost having a crash in the marina, and where Jamie suffered disc problem in his back. An ambulance was later called while they were in the Philippines.

➜ Being denied entry into several ports during international border closures

➜ Getting snagged on a power cable

➜ Discovering a sunken drug plane (they dove on it!)

➜ Launching a rocket from their boat

➜ Having their catamaran haulout aborted

➜ Avoiding disaster on more than one occasion

➜ Jamie had to go to the hospital too:

They have as much fun as they have drama. Fortunately, they both work well together on the boat with each taking an equal role.

From my experience (I dated a Filipina and yes, she was beautiful!), most don’t want to go in the sun or sailing, but Princess is clearly keen to get out there and explore. She’s a rare exception 🙂

Future Plans

Where to next? They’re planning on going through the ICW and then the Bahamas. Eventually, they’ll work their way to Australia over the next several years, and I certainly can’t wait to welcome them!

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this beautiful couple?

➜ Plan your journey ahead

➜ Be willing to make some changes

➜ Roll with the drama and punches

➜ Be willing to work on your boat

➜ Don’t be afraid to shop around

Most importantly – you don’t need a boat that is made by one of the major boat builders. By choosing your own design, you can find a boat that you can work on yourself so easily.

Conclusion

Sailing Life on Jupiter has a saying:

“I hope that our videos inspire other dreamers to reach out, focus and achieve their dreams.
Hopefully some inspiration to –
“Quit Job Go Sailing”.
Life is not supposed to be about just getting by.
I find it ridiculous to spend your life paying off a mortgage just so that at the end of it you have somewhere to live.
You’ve only got one shot this life, as far as I can tell…. so make it special.
Dream big.
Live “NOW”. Make every moment count…. towards your dreams.”

– Captain Jamie

And I totally agree! Provided you’re fully prepared first.

If you’re planning to quit your job and sail a few years from now, then I have an exciting opportunity…

This is the definitive guide on Sailing Sunday for 2023.

Sailing Sunday FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Sunday

Crew Members

Brittni Moffatt (age 35) from Canada

Ryan Weepers (age 37) from Australia

They have known each other for 17 years and have been together for much of that time, having initially met in Canada.

Their dog Jackson is a German Shepherd. They like cruising and use it as a base station to rescue animals along the way, for which they have saved hundreds so far.

The Boat

The crew from ailing Sunday has a Beneteau Oceanis 46

Upgrades

Together, they have upgraded their yacht with:

➜ Their home-built Watermaker

➜ Em-Trak AIS and VHF radio

➜ Dinghy with outboard

➜ Spearfishing equipment

Location

Sailing Sunday is currently in the Grenadines.

They have actually been here for a while.

Past Cruising

They have sailed in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean.

Affording It

Did they come from rich parents? Not really. They worked hard for several years and without kids, were able to save up enough for their boat.

Net Worth

Sailing Sunday has a net worth of $270,000 Australian dollars.

Making Loot

They make $5,900/month on YouTube through:

➜ Gaining more Patreon subscribers

➜ Running ads on their YouTube channel

➜ Selling their own merchandise

➜ Occasional brand sponsorships

Most of their income doesn’t go into their own pocket and instead is used for charity work and rescuing more pups along the way.

Unlike most other cruising YouTubers, you’ll feel more comfortable supporting these creators. Check out @finns_friends_ on Instagram to see some of the animals they have rescued along the way.

Collaborations

Have you seen them on any other channels? I haven’t yet but if you have seen them featured elsewhere, please let me know and I can update this article about Sailing Sunday.

Big Moments

During their epic journey to support animals, they have encountered:

➜ Struggling through monster Atlantic waves

➜ Practicing a Man Overboard drill

➜ Having their dinghy stolen in Mindelo

➜ Getting refused entry after sailing to Malta and Turkey

➜ Brittni got injured while sailing

➜ They saved some homeless puppies on the beach

The most devastating moment was when Finn their cat went missing early last year. He jumped off the boat at the marina and has never been seen since. This left a hole in their heart, as well in the hearts of their loyal fans.

Future Plans

Where to next? It’s likely that they’ll be finishing this season in the Caribbean and then heading to the South Pacific in 2023.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this heart-driven couple?

➜ Turn your cruising into a mission

➜ Don’t be afraid to take your pets

➜ Keep your boat as simple as possible

➜ Be resourceful and be prepared

And don’t let your years slip away!

Conclusion

On their laptop, they have a saying:

SAIL NOW, WORK LATER

…and I absolutely agree!

Sailing Luckyfish: Where Did Zaya Go From YouTube? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Sailing Luckyfish for 2023.

Over the last 2 years, I have spent 23 hours watching and researching everything I could about Sailing Luckyfish to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Stew and Zaya 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Sailing Luckyfish afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ Who is Zaya, her age and nationality

➜ If they had a divorce or are still sailing

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

But more on that later… 🙂

Sailing Luckyfish FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Luckyfish

Crew Members

Stewart Coates (otherwise known as Stew, and not to be confused with any actors) is 55 years old.

He is a Kiwi but has spent time in Australia.

Zaya Roza (age 43) is Stew’s wife.

She is from Mongolia although looks more like Thai/Chinese.

Tuya (Zaya’s sister) has been a crew member for some time and is single the last time I checked.

Ariun, Oyun (fitness model) and Leo (their son) are also crew members.

The Boat

Sailing Luckyfish owns a Wharram-designed Tiki 38 catamaran which is a very simple design and very much like traditional cruising catamarans. It has retractable engines (just like the Seawind 1160 that I’m purchasing), is easy to handle and is easy to work on.

Better yet, you can beach this catamaran quite easily.

Upgrades

Stew has upgraded the boat with a host of features to make their life easier. Check out his blog and channel to discover more.

Location

Luckyfish hasn’t uploaded to YouTube in well over a year. Did they stop sailing? Has it been too difficult to raise Leo on the boat?

They were in Belize the last time I checked. If you do have more information, please let me know so I can update this article.

Past Cruising

They have explored in South Africa, the Atlantic and the Caribbean. They prefer warmer cruising waters rather than cold places.

Affording It

Stew wasn’t born into money and simply worked his guts out for decades. He built a business called Magnetic Palm Islands Rent-a-Yacht and sold it in 2004, then built another business called Kooka Publishing. He also worked as a Geologist and traveled around the world doing freelance projects, which is how he met Zaya in Mongolia.

Net Worth

Sailing Luckyfish have a net worth of $850,000.

Making Loot

They make a small income on their YouTube channel of $2,600/month by:

➜ Running their own Patreon subscription

➜ Selling their own merchandise

➜ Running ads on their YouTube channel

It’s definitely worth looking at Stew’s blog if you’re a sailing enthusiast. He goes into deep detail about his unique choice in catamaran.

Collaborations

I haven’t seen them on any other YouTube channels.

They are similar to Wildling Sailing if you wanted another channel to delve deeper into. 🙂

Big Moments

Moments in their journey include:

➜ Running aground more than once

➜ Crossing the Atlantic

➜ Stew got injured at St Helena

He also told the story about how Sailing La Vagabonde were able to get their brand-spankin’ new Outrememer back in 2016:

Future Plans

Where to next? Will they come back to YouTube? No one knows for sure, but hopefully, Stew and his family return to tell their story. He’s EXTREMELY knowledgeable and it isn’t just about bikinis and sundowners.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn? A ton:

➜ You don’t need a fancy boat

➜ Sailing with the family is sustainable

➜ Learn to do as much as you can

➜ Avoid the super expensive stuff

➜ Just be real and honest on YouTube

And of course, have a ton of fun!

Conclusion

Sailing Luckyfish has an awesome saying:

“Go light. Go green. Go for as long as you want!”

And I absolutely agree. Can’t wait to see what’s coming on the horizon!

Sailing Ocean Fox: How Can They Afford To Sail? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on S/V Ocean Fox for 2023.

Over the last 2 years, I have spent 57 hours watching and researching everything I could about Sailing Ocean Fox to learn more about their story.

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

Sailing Ocean Fox FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Ocean Fox

Crew Members

Simon Fowler (age 63)

Carla Fowler (age 58)

Carla was born in Angola and due to the war, eventually moved to Brazil with her family. She only met Simon around 7 years ago and they have been married for the last 5 years.

The Boat

Sailing Ocean Fox had a 2012 Lagoon 400 with an owner’s cabin but they sold it around 1 year ago as they wish to build their own barge:

Upgrades

They have upgraded their catamaran with:

➜ Spectra watermaker

➜ Additional solar panels

➜ B&G Zeus 3 and AIS

Location

Sailing Ocean Fox is currently in the United Kingdom:

Past Cruising

They have currently sailed to:

➜ The Mediterranean

➜ The Caribbean

They have also done an Atlantic crossing and are planning to head into the South Pacific in the near future.

Affording It

Simon and Carla worked hard for decades. Through owning businesses and investments, and selling their house, they were able to purchase their catamaran in 2017.

Net Worth

Sailing Ocean Fox’s net worth is $1,600,000 as of May 2022.

Making Loot

Their income is generated through:

➜ Their Patreon donors

➜ Running ads on their YouTube

➜ Selling their own merchandise

➜ Income generated through Carla’s cooking website – healthyonboard.com

It only took them 11 weeks to get monetized by YouTube which is significantly faster than most cruising couples.

Collaborations

I have not seen them on any other YouTube channels. If you have, please reach out to me and I can update this article. 🙂

Big Moments

Some wonderful moments in their YouTube journey include:

➜ They ran aground on the coral reefs once

➜ Running out of fuel at sea

➜ Getting a hole in their dinghy

➜ Swimming naked more than once

They also interviewed Mário and Nina from Sailing SeaTramp about their robbery in Panama

Future Plans

Where to next? They’re planning to keep sailing once their current renovations are complete.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn?

➜ A Lagoon, while not initially designed for blue ocean cruising, can still cross oceans

➜ Don’t be afraid of boat work in your older years

➜ Make the most of every day

➜ You CAN start your own food blog

And above all else, have fun!

Conclusion

While they’re much older than me, I have enjoyed learning a ton from Simon and Carla. They’re very ambitious with a ton of energy, and I can’t wait to see this barge build of theirs completed in 2022. 🙂
