Brittni Moffatt (age 35) from Canada

Ryan Weepers (age 37) from Australia

They have known each other for 17 years and have been together for much of that time, having initially met in Canada.

Their dog Jackson is a German Shepherd. They like cruising and use it as a base station to rescue animals along the way, for which they have saved hundreds so far.

The Boat

The crew from ailing Sunday has a Beneteau Oceanis 46

Together, they have upgraded their yacht with:

Sailing Luckyfish FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Luckyfish

Crew Members

Stewart Coates (otherwise known as Stew, and not to be confused with any actors) is 55 years old.

He is a Kiwi but has spent time in Australia.

Zaya Roza (age 43) is Stew’s wife.

She is from Mongolia although looks more like Thai/Chinese.

Tuya (Zaya’s sister) has been a crew member for some time and is single the last time I checked.

Ariun, Oyun (fitness model) and Leo (their son) are also crew members.

The Boat

Sailing Luckyfish owns a Wharram-designed Tiki 38 catamaran which is a very simple design and very much like traditional cruising catamarans. It has retractable engines (just like the Seawind 1160 that I’m purchasing), is easy to handle and is easy to work on.

Better yet, you can beach this catamaran quite easily.

Upgrades

Stew has upgraded the boat with a host of features to make their life easier. Check out his blog and channel to discover more.

Location

Luckyfish hasn’t uploaded to YouTube in well over a year. Did they stop sailing? Has it been too difficult to raise Leo on the boat?

They were in Belize the last time I checked. If you do have more information, please let me know so I can update this article.

Past Cruising

They have explored in South Africa, the Atlantic and the Caribbean. They prefer warmer cruising waters rather than cold places.

Affording It

Stew wasn’t born into money and simply worked his guts out for decades. He built a business called Magnetic Palm Islands Rent-a-Yacht and sold it in 2004, then built another business called Kooka Publishing. He also worked as a Geologist and traveled around the world doing freelance projects, which is how he met Zaya in Mongolia.

Bryony, Beau and Bear are their children, while Boza is their dog who sadly passed away early last year.

Their children are ‘world schooled’ in that they do homeschooling from wherever they live and are able to experience lessons first-hand.

The Boat

Sailing Pickle Family owns a 1982 Sonstige Prout 35 for which they paid roughly 58.500 € or approximately $60,000 USD.

There has been a ton of work that they have needed to do.

This has included new electronics, tender and more.

Location

They are in Venice and this is also reflected on their YouTube account as per Episode 124.

They have actually been here for about 6 months now.

Clearly, they are up to date on their videos.

They have sailed around the Mediterranean.

Chris and Nicky had saved hard for multiple years and weren’t simply lucky, although the universe was probably on their side. 🙂

Both girls do YouTube full-time and are influencers. Both are single too the last time I checked.

They also have their 2 dogs on board.

Sailing The Far Side has a custom-built 1987 Tradewinds 50′ yacht. It was originally their dad’s boat.

Upgrades to their yacht include:

The Boat

Sailing Learning By Doing sails a custom-built 37-foot-long yacht which is very different compared to factory-built production vessels. Allyacht Spars Australia did the design.

It was built in Brisbane by older sailing enthusiasts by RQYS Manly and is pretty light compared to other boats of the same length and beam. Its bottom is significantly flatter than most other yachts too which makes it seriously fast.

The boat was designed for racing rather than cruising, but that works as a true benefit. Vernon can get to his anchorages significantly faster than others, while also being able to avoid storms by sailing faster.

Upgrades

Vernon has upgraded his boat with:

➜ Mantus anchor with 60m chain 100m nylon rope.

➜ New jib and genoa, plus 2 spinnaker poles

He has a fridge and freezer onboard unlike others.

Location

They are currently on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia.

Past Cruising

Vernon has explored:

➜ SE Asia including Indonesia and the Solomon Islands

➜ Australia (his Whitsunday video went viral with 5m+ views!)

They have been married for 12 years as of April 2022. Interestingly, it was Amy and Amy’s dad who got David into sailing, not the other way around as is commonly the case 🙂

The Boat

Out Chasing Stars from YouTube owns a 2014 Fountain Pajot Helia 44 (otherwise known as an FP Helia 44-foot)

Upgrades

They have upgraded their catamaran with several things, including:

➜ Marriage savers (wireless headphones for getting in and out of marinas)

➜ Medical preparations including a full-fledged first aid kit

➜ Swapping from AGM to Lithium batteries

➜ Cruisewater watermaker to top up the tanks

Out Chasing Stars is in the United States.

They have been filming a ton of excellent and helpful videos lately:

Past Cruising

Out Chasing Stars have already circumnavigated the world (40,000nm) with their catamaran which made many haters go silent.

After all, David and Amy chose a boat that’s designed for the charter market rather than bluewater cruising, and yet, David and Amy made it happen with some trial and error.

They didn’t consider a Seawind catamaran as they wanted to start their journey either in Europe or North America, whereas Seawind is based in Australia while their factory is based in Vietnam.

Starry Horizons is a good compromise – as far as catamarans go, she’s a bit on the slower performance side. But, compared to our cruising friends in monohulls, we do pretty well, as we average about 6.75 knots on passage.

Affording It

David and Amy are so young – how did they afford to buy an expensive catamaran? Well, David worked in tech and Amy worked hard in her business which she eventually sold.

They saved hard, sold their house/cars, and took off for a trip of a lifetime!

Out Chasing Stars is worth $1,200,000 based on their boat value and personal possessions.

Making Loot

They make an income through many sources, including:

➜ Running ads on their YouTube videos and website

Meg and Darren (both 60 years old)

Meg is from NZ while Darren is from Australia. They met on the Noosa river which is not too far from where I live and both have been sailing since their 20’s.

They also have their dog Moo on board.

The Boat

S/V Sarean is a 1985 Bowman 47 which is worth $120,000.

They have upgraded their yacht with:

Sailing Kawai FAQs (January 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Kawai

Crew Members

Jason Stephens (age 37)

Tracey Stephens (age 36)

They were inspired by Laura Decker’s documentary and the other by Chasing Bubbles. They watched SV Delos for quite a few seasons, much like myself.

The Boat

Sailing Kawai owns a 2013 Hanse 445 which is a 45-foot yacht. They also have a tender with an outboard.

Upgrades

Some basic upgrades to their boat include:

➜ B&G Zeus 3

➜ New Mantus anchor

Location

They haven’t uploaded to YouTube for a while, and their last-known location was Marmaris Yacht Marina.

UPDATE: They are finally back on YouTube!

I checked on their Instagram accounts and they’ve returned to the Gold Coast to be with their kids.

They may still have more videos to publish (some from 2.5 years ago!) and will return to sailing full-time.

Update: Their adventures in Europe have begun! 😀

Past Cruising

Kawai mostly sailed in the Mediterranean but they flew back to Australia when the Pandemic began.

Affording It

Both Jason and Tracey worked pretty hard to get their yacht. It wasn’t easy but through working long hours and investing wisely, they were able to pay cash for their boat.

They sold their house, their car and most of their personal possessions to make the dream happen. They didn’t have any kids which made things easier.

Net Worth

As of 2023, Sailing Kawai has a net worth $820,000.

This is based upon the value of their yacht and personal assets.

Making Loot

While they were on YouTube, they hardly made any money at all. They certainly weren’t doing this for the money and relied upon investments and personal cash to fund their adventures.

They had a pretty enjoyable journey and didn’t encounter any problems, nor did they create any click-bait content for the views. They’re probably one of the most down-to-earth creators I’ve come across here at Cruising Freedom, and trust me…I’ve come across many!

Where to next? They are hopefully heading back to Europe soon to continue the journey and eventually find themselves in the South Pacific.
