Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Harbors Unknown for 2023.

Over the last several years, I have spent many hours watching and researching everything I could about Harbors Unknown to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Fabio and Kristin 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Harbors Unknown afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ What their true ages are

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Harbors Unknown FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Wanderlust

Crew Members

Kristin Potenti (age 42)

Fabio Potenti (age 51)

Yoda is their dog.

The Boat

Harbors Unknown have a 2020 Seawind 1600 catamaran.

This is one of my favourite catamarans, and my next boat will be the 1190 Sport version.

Strangely enough, very few other YouTubers have chosen Seawind catamarans, but the most popular are Sailing Ruby Rose.

Upgrades

They have upgraded their boat with several options from the Seawind catalogue.

Location

They are currently in The Bahamas and plan to stay here for some time. It does appear that they’re relatively up to date on their YouTube videos.

Past Cruising

They have previously sailed through most of the United States but this was on previous monohulls that they owned.

Affording It

Fabio worked as a marketing officer while Kristin worked at an advertising agency. They were stuck in the daily grind but without children, they were able to save up enough to purchase their catamaran for cash.

Previous to this, they owned a Beneteau Oceanhis 473 and a Dragonfly 35 Trimaran.

Net Worth

Harbors Unknown has a net worth of $1,570,000.

This is estimated based on the value of their boat, business income and assumed personal savings.

Making Loot

They do take their content on YouTube seriously and do make around $4,500/month off the channel.

They do this through:

➜ Using Amazon affiliate links

➜ Allowing ads on their videos

➜ Running a Patreon account

They do have a sponsorship deal with BetterHelp. With their number of subscribers, it’s a good time to reach out for more sponsorship deals.

Collaborations

I haven’t seen them with any other YouTubers, but they did hang out with Cruising World at the Annapolis Boat Show:

Big Moments

They have been fortunate to have a relatively easy journey so far. Of course, I wish them safe winds and following seas.

Future Plans

Their next plan is to head to the South Pacific and eventually make their way to Australia.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this beautiful couple?

➜ It’s OK to buy an expensive catamaran

➜ You need to shop around (as I’ve done!)

➜ Plan for the future, but start it all today

➜ Find someone who’ll share your wanderlust

And of course, don’t sail with a schedule.

Conclusion

While they might be small on YouTube, they’re on a Seawind! These vessels are light, fast and affordable.

I’m surprised that so many YouTubers aren’t choosing these boats. I know I certainly will be!

Until then…

Some say I’m obsessed, but sailing the world is my childhood dream.

They’re living the dream, but that dream isn’t actually that far away.

I mentioned earlier about discovering the #1 cruising business model.

With this exciting opportunity, I’ll be able to:

➜ Generate a sustainable full-time income through learning basic skills

➜ Fund the purchase of my first sailing catamaran without any loans

➜ Do it without selling to friends and family (I found a better solution!)

If you wanted to know:

➜ Where they are planning to sail to next

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Sailing Avocet FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Avocet

Crew Members

Chris Neely (age 24)

Marissa Neely (age 25) who is a USCG licensed Captain and one of the youngest in the country.

The Boat

Sailing Avocet sails on their 1979 Cheoy Lee 41

They bought this as a project boat and have been working on it while living aboard since 2018.

Upgrades

They have touched every inch of this boat through projects and upgrades including (but not limited to) a mast rebuild, bulwark conversion, fridge rebuild, quarter berth remodel, head remodel, galley remodel, nav station remodel, dodger build, major haul out (linked here) lithium battery build, and more!

Location

They are currently in California and doing more boat work.

Past Cruising

They have mostly sailed in the Bahamas and United States.

Affording It

How did they afford their boat right after college? Well, they worked hard (60 hours/week) and saved a lot. By paying off their student loans and having a budget-friendly wedding, they were able to save enough for their simple yacht on the water.

Net Worth

Sailing Avocet has an estimated net worth of $370,000 as of 2023.

Making Loot

They might be a smaller channel but they do take YouTube seriously.

➜ They run ads on their channel

➜ They link out to Amazon via affiliate links

➜ They also receive a few dollars from Patreon

That said, YouTube isn’t their primary source of income and they don’t publish as much as other channels do.

Marissa owns a digital marketing firm called Fair Winds Media (100% remote agency and highly recommended!) while Chris works as a cinematographer.

Collaborations

I have seen them sailing with SV Prism (Chris’ older brother) who are slowly growing their YouTube channel. Avocent was also featured with David Shih (a friend of mine) and Expedition Evans at the Annapolis Boat Show recently.

Big Moments

They haven’t really experienced anything bad, controversial or disastrous in their few years on YouTube.

I highly respect that they’ve avoided all the click-bait drama that some other channels have. They simply focused on the boat work that had to be done.

Future Plans

Where to next? Right now they’re planning on leaving California and heading to Mexico, and fingers crossed they’ll tackle the South Pacific in 2023.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this young couple?

➜ Find the right partner to have by your side

➜ If you’re young, your career can wait

➜ Work towards common goals starting today

➜ Freedom is found by working remotely

Conclusion

I really like these smaller YouTubers who have a unique sailing vessel. They have leaned in to do as much boat work as they can, and have inspired many of us younger adults to get out there and explore the world!

Boat Name

Crew Members

Austin Jensen (age 35)

Niki Jensen (age 34)

They are from Arizona but have lived in Florida.

The Boat

I’m not sure what their yacht was but it seemed like a Hunter.

The Accident

First, they got a hole in their boat (after hitting a drawbridge) so they headed to the docks to have it lifted out by crane.

This part was no problem, but they then needed another lift crane to get the mast off.

Unfortunately, the crane toppled over and destroyed their boat (and the crane) which marked the end of their YouTube channel.

Fortunately, they had insurance coverage that covered the boat.

Today in 2023

Niki Jensen has become a massive social media influencer on Instagram:

Together with Austin, they own Warrior Company.

Past Cruising

Before the accident, they had only briefly sailed in US waters.

Affording It

They both worked hard for several years to purchase their boat.

Net Worth

Austin and Niki Jensen has a net worth of $570,000 based on their business income. Today they’re located in Arizona and own two successful businesses.

➜ Work hard for the dream

➜ Face the setbacks head-on

➜ Don’t let others judge you

And of course, find the perfect partner!

Conclusion

The Sailing Salty Mermaid channel was a very short-lived experience that sadly ended with the total destruction of their boat.

That said, in 2022, they are on a new journey that

Calico Skies Sailing FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Calico Skies

Crew Members

Bill Heaton (age 40)

Grace Heaton (age 39)

They are college sweethearts and met while studying at Manhattan College. They bought their sailboat 13 years ago and finally untied the lines about 3 years ago.

The Boat

Calico Skies Sailing owns a 1985 Sabre 36.

Upgrades

They have upgraded her with a water maker, 6x lithium batteries, 1100watts of solar, a wind generator, an inverter charger and even a generator just in case.

Location

They are currently in Mexico.

Past Cruising

Most of their sailing has been in Central America, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Affording It

Like many YouTubers, Calico Skies Sailing simply worked hard to achieve their dreams. They were making huge money on Wall Street and were able to save most of their income.

Net Worth

YouTubers typically increase their wealth once they begin publishing videos consistently.

As of 2023, Calico Skies Sailing has a net worth of $770,000.

Despite their large net worth, they have opted for a cheaper boat and are proponents of the F.I.R.E. movement. That is – retiring early through mindful budgets and saving early.

Making Loot

Calico Skies Sailing makes $3,100/month on YouTube through:

➜ Monthly Patreon subscription

➜ Selling their own merchandise

➜ Allowing ads on their channel

➜ Accepting PayPal donations

This is *just* enough to keep them cruising. In addition, as experienced hedge fund managers, they do have some personal investments which keep them going.

They only spend around $2,000/month onboard together, making their cruising more affordable than living in a normal house.

Collaborations

Calico Skies Sailing is definitely an outgoing couple and has hung out with:

Sailing Into Freedom (Plukky, the legend!)

S/V Delos

Sailing Parlay Revival

They recently did a boat race against these guys. They have also hung out with David Shih at the Annapolis Boat Show.

Big Moments

Sailing has been relatively stress-free, although:

➜ They received some criticism about not being prepared before an ocean crossing as they had to ask for diesel fuel from a cargo ship

➜ They came across crocodiles in the San Blas Islands

Through these experiences, they have definitely learned some lessons along the way.

Future Plans

Where to next? It’s most likely that they’ll head west towards the South Pacific and eventually head to Australia. Plukky has probably inspired them. 🙂

Key Takeaways

This couple reminds us that we don’t need an expensive boat to have a ton of fun out there on the water! Despite having many friends who are millionaires, they decided to retire early and live simply, without all the stress from the corporate world.

Conclusion

I have really enjoyed watching their channel and can’t wait to see what more will come!

They were able to save most of their income while planning to set sail.

Net Worth

Sailing Yacht Talisman has net worth of $750,000.

They spend $30,000/year on repairs and maintenance (despite doing most of the work themselves), and another $30,000/year on food, clothing and entry into countries.

Making Loot

Sailing Yacht Talisman have completely ignored many opportunities to make money on their YouTube channel.

They have no affiliate links in their video description and nothing on their about page.

It’s clear that they’re making passive income off past investments that they built up over decades of hard work, rather than building an online business.

I guess it’s working for them…but they ARE leaving money on the table. Scroll below for a great solution.

Collaborations

I haven’t seen them have anyone else on their channel.

However, they did an in-person interview with Sailing Zingaro as they own identical boats. It’s definitely worth watching:

Both creators are definitely very knowledgeable and with a wealth of knowledge on crossing oceans by sail.

Big Moments

They’ve had some close encounters with other boats, but otherwise, it’s been relatively smooth sailing.

Future Plans

Sailing Yacht Talisman are full-time cruisers and aren’t stopping anytime soon.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn?

➜ Do your own research on boats

➜ Be willing to fund your dream

➜ There are no free lunches here

➜ Get your partner to be onboard

And of course, work towards your freedom, starting today.

Conclusion

Sailing Yacht Talisman might be a smaller channel, but they’re HUGELY knowledgeable.

I have learned a ton through watching many of their videos.

Unfortunately, there is no one to support them (apart from subscribing, which I have!) but would love to donate to their journey and keep them cruising non-stop.

Create Your Own Cruising Freedom

Hey! 😃 it’s Joshua again…

I’ve been very inspired by Sailing Yacht Talisman and their travels…

Some say I’m obsessed, but sailing the world is my childhood dream.

They’re living the dream, but that dream isn’t actually that far away.

I mentioned earlier about discovering the #1 cruising business model.

With this exciting opportunity, I’ll be able to:

➜ Generate a sustainable full-time income through learning basic skills

➜ Fund the purchase of my first sailing catamaran without any loans

➜ Do it without selling to friends and family (I found a better solution!)

➜ Share my lifetime passion for sailing, cruising and global adventures

Leading the Escapade: Who Are Jason and Janaye? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Leading the Escapade for 2023.

Over the last several years, I have spent many hours watching and researching everything I could about Leading the Escapade to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am super obsessed with fellow Australian sailors 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Leading the Escapade afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ If Janaye offers uncut or nude footage

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Leading the Escapade FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Escapade

Crew Members

Jason and Janaye MacDonald

They are both 28 years old from the Gold Coast Hinterland of Queensland, Australia.

The Boat

Leading the Escapade have a Jeanneau Sun Oddysey 40.

Upgrades

They have replaced their rigging and some of their electronics.

Location

They are currently in Europe, or more specifically, Croatia:

Past Cruising

Apart from sailing Australia when they were younger, most of their cruising has been in the Mediterranean.

Affording It

Jason and Janaye just had ordinary jobs back home in Australia, but without any kids to look after, they were able to save up just enough to purchase their yacht for cash.

Net Worth

Leading the Escapade has a net worth of $350,000 Australian dollars. This is representative of their boat’s value and business income.

Making Loot

Yes, they do make money on YouTube through:

➜ Patreon and PayPal donations

➜ Affiliate links to Wise (online bank)

➜ Running their GoFundMe account

➜ Allowing ads on their YouTube channel

I estimate they’re making around $4,700/month which is enough to sustain them and their nomadic lifestyle.

Collaborations

As they are a younger channel, they haven’t had a chance to collaborate with other YouTubers. However, there are some similarities between them and Kristina’s Travels who are currently sailing up Australia’s east coast.

Big Moments

They have had a relatively stress-free experience while in the Med, apart from overstaying their Turkish Visa and getting into some serious trouble.

Future Plans

It’s likely that they’ll continue in the Mediterranean for this season, and eventually leave for the Caribbean. From there – I guess we’ll see them in the South Pacific, and eventually back home to Australia.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from these young yet ambitious Australians?

➜ Create a purpose behind your travels

➜ Be willing to deal with some adversity

➜ Work hard to earn your freedom online

➜ Find someone who’ll support you today

And of course, make the most of every moment!

Conclusion

I’ve really enjoyed learning a ton from these guys. They know what they’re doing on YouTube by crafting killer content. They definitely deserve more subscribers!

Sailing Satori: What Boat Do Nick and Kelly Own? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Sailing Satori for 2023.

Over the last several years, I have spent many hours watching and researching everything I could about Sailing Satori to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Nick and Kelly 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Sailing Satori afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ If Kelly offers extra footage

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

Sailing Satori FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Satori

Crew Members

Nick Johnson (age 42)

Kelly Porter (age 39)

Arthur is their dog who is 9 years old.

The Boat

Sailing Satori has a 1989 Morgan 44 Center cockpit. Check out the boat tour:

Upgrades

They have upgraded the water maker and electronics.

Location

They are currently in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Past Cruising

In previous episodes, they have sailed throughout the Caribbean and the British Virgin Islands.

Affording It

Nick worked hard for years as an engineer and consultant, and eventually started his own business. He saved up as much as he could.

Meanwhile, Kelly owned her own dance studio which she later sold to partly fund the purchase of their boat.

Net Worth

Sailing Satori has a net worth of $730,000.

Making Loot

You can book to go cruising on their boat, either for a day or several days. This makes an excellent opportunity to both learn sailing, but also hang out with these awesome YouTubers!

This is one way that they’re making loot. Another way is through their YouTube channel.

Income streams include:

➜ Ads on their YouTube channel

➜ Amazon affiliate links

➜ Running their own Patreon

➜ Gaining brand partnerships

I estimate this represents $2,600/month in revenue.

Collaborations

Despite how social they are, I haven’t seen them featured on any other YouTube channels.

They are very similar to Beau and Brandy Sailing if you wanted to check out other YouTubers who are cruising full-time.

Big Moments

Things haven’t been easy as they have:

➜ Experienced a fire in their hull

➜ Busting a chainplate in a squall

➜ Getting a diesel bug in their banks

➜ Rescuing a guy in Dry Tortugas

Most days are pretty calm for them.

Future Plans

They are planning to stay close to the United States.

This is because of their aging parents.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this beautiful couple?

➜ Be willing to learn the ropes

➜ Take time to enjoy the experience

➜ Work towards your freedom today

➜ You don’t need to wait until age 65

and of course, for the gents, you have to find a beautiful mermaid just like Kelly! 😀

Conclusion

I’ve really enjoyed their simple yet sophisticated journey on a sailboat.

They’ve kept things as simple as possible to make their dream a reality.
