In the last few years, they have experienced:

➜ Being approached while sailing at night

➜ Their boat almost sank due to a large gash

➜ Experiencing a MAYDAY and rescue at sea

➜ Discovering big holes in their boat (damn!)

You can definitely see the resilience in their content.

Future Plans

International border closures made things difficult, but they’re now seeking to explore South America and may then explore the South Pacific.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this beautiful couple?

➜ Be willing to take calculated risks

➜ Work in harmony with each other

➜ Buy an affordable boat to start sailing

➜ Be real on YouTube and share the journey

Sailing Emerald Steel FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Emerald Steel

Crew Members

Julius Hanak (age 73)

Suzie Hanak (age 60)

The Boat

They built this boat as a custom project more than 30 years ago. It was completed in 1987 and they have owned her since!

Location

They are currently in French Polynesia:

Past Cruising

They have circumnavigated the world more than once.

Affording It

They escaped communism and used a combination of personal savings and ‘sweat equity to build their boat and untie the lines.

Net Worth

Today, Sailing Emerald Steel is worth $220,000. That appears remarkably small, and yet, they have sustained themselves for so many years.

They ensured they anchored as much as they could, thereby avoiding expensive marinas. Their monthly budget was only around $1,500 combined.

Making Loot

How did they sustain themselves over all these years?

➜ They learned skills they could use in other countries

➜ They did odd jobs along the way to keep going

➜ Today, they make a small income from YouTube

Collaborations

I haven’t seen them on any other cruising channels, but they are similar to Paul and Sheryl Chard and Captain Fatty Goodlander.

You just can’t beat that type of cruising experience.

Big Moments

They have shared some of their worst experiences, including:

➜ Running aground more than once

➜ Partially sinking their boat

➜ Going through extreme weather

They have always kept things real while being conservative sailors and looking for ideal weather windows.

Future Plans

They’re going to keep sailing and aren’t stopping anytime soon!

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this wonderful couple?

➜ Keep going, no matter the obstacle

➜ Anything is possible with determination

➜ You can keep the same boat for 30+ years

➜ It’s best to have a supportive partner

And of course, learn your own boat work.

Conclusion

Unlike almost every polished channel on YouTube these days, Sailing Emerald Steel aren’t beauty queens and credit card captains.

Instead, they escaped communism many years ago, built their own steel built and went cruising for decades at a time. Today, they’ve earned the respect of the PROPER cruising community, with many of us eager to see what’s to come!

Drake Paragon: What Sailboat Do They Have? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Drake Paragon for 2023.

Over the last 10 years, I have spent so many hours watching and researching everything I could about Drake Paragon to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Drake and Monique 😃 the originals on YouTube)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Drake Paragon afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ More details about their boat and Eanna

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

Drake Paragon FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Paragon

Crew Members

Drake Roberts (age 52)

Monique Davis (age 49)

Éanna did spend some time onboard but has since left.

The Boat

Drake Paragon owns a Westsail 42.

Upgrades

They have upgraded their boat with:

➜ Woodstove

➜ Singer sewing machine

➜ Replaced rigging

➜ New electronics

➜ A wind generator

Drake goes into deeper details within his videos.

Location

Drake Paragon is currently in the Faroe Islands.

They haven’t uploaded for around 2 weeks:

Past Cruising

They have effectively sailed most of the world, predominantly in colder climates.

Affording It

They worked hard and saved diligently to buy their yacht, for which they have lived on for the last 10 years, aside from some short travels abroad.

Net Worth

Drake Paragon has a net worth of $270,000 based on their boat value and business valuation.

Making Loot

They command a lot of respect on YouTube for producing videos for 10+ years now.

With that, many people are OK with them making a bit of coin here and there.

They do this by:

➜ Allowing YouTube to put ads on their channel

➜ Accepting donations via Patreon and PayPal

➜ Doing some freelance work (writing/consulting)

I estimate they’re making around $3,200/month which is enough to sustain themselves and their journey.

Collaborations

Their best collaboration was this video:

They have avoided hanging out with all the rich and famous cruising couples, instead choosing to connect with those who are more realistic.

Big Moments

They have experienced a ton in their journey, most notably going through multiple storms.

Future Plans

They’re going to continue cruising and I don’t see any reason for them to stop.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn? I really think it boils down to their unique content designed for SAILORS, not the general public.

They have avoided the ‘chicks for clicks’ type of content (you know, bikinis and more bikinis) and instead, focused on real-life boat work and cruising.

This goes to show how you CAN be genuine on YouTube and build an audience. As they say “The Real Cruising Life”

Conclusion

Drake Paragon follows the well-known philosophy…

Go Small. Go Simple. Go Now.

And I totally agree!

It’s been working for them for 10 years, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

➜ How Chase The Story afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ Why they got a divorce and if they’ll return to YouTube

Chase The Story FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Cheeky Monkey

Crew Members

Captain Tasha Hacker (age 39 now)

Ryan Hacker (age 40 now)

They had a divorce in early 2018 while in French Polynesia, sold their boat and returned to normal lives.

I’m not sure why they separated as they seemed quite happy and didn’t really have kids or financial issues.

The Boat

Chase The Story owned a 2015 Fountaine-Pajot Helia 44

Location

No one knows what happened to Tasha. If you have more information, please let me know.

This was her last video:

Trouble in paradise?

Past Cruising

They sailed through the South Pacific.

Affording It

Both worked for years in corporate and got a boat loan to purchase their catamaran.

Net Worth

Chase The Story has a net worth of $720,000.

This is based on their boat’s valuation, personal savings and own investments. They also had a small business while cruising and creating videos.

Making Loot

Before selling the boat and leaving YouTube, they made money through Patreon and referral links to Amazon.

Collaborations

I recall seen them featured with:

Monday Never Sailing

Gone With The Wynns

Were they on any other channels? If you did see Tasha somewhere else, please let me know. 🙂

Big Moments

The biggest moment was the divorce and her going ocean racing. Otherwise, she had quite the journey!

Future Plans

I’m not sure what plans she has, given that she hasn’t bee on YouTube or social media for a few years now.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn?

➜ Cruising divorces do happen

➜ Be willing to take the risks

➜ Don’t sweat the small stuff

➜ Work harder every single day

And of course, find a partner you absolutely click with!

Conclusion

Sadly, according to Tasha: “Turf to Surf is a blog that started with a couple sailing around the world, and ended in divorce.”

I think this was written when she was in the depths of the divorce. Today I imagine she is so much happier, and look forward to seeing her return to sailing!

They do have children, although both are adults now.

The Boat

Sailing Dark Angel has a 2006 Island Spirit Fortunate 401 catamaran.

Their boat needed some work and they’ve added:

➜ Acuva water purifier

➜ iCom VHF radio and AIS

➜ Harken 44ST power winch

Location

They are currently in Norman’s Cay:

Right now in 2026, Sailing Dark Angel has a net worth of $470,000.

This is estimated based on their boat valuation, business income and personal investments.

Making Loot

Sailing Dark Angel makes a small amount on YouTube through:

➜ Selling their own merchandise

➜ Allowing advertisers on their channel

I estimate this is around $700/month.

They owned a corporate training business previously and live off the cash from the sale of this.

Collaborations

I’m pretty sure they haven’t been featured on any other channels, but if you have seen them, let me know and I can update this article.

Big Moments

Their journey has been pretty easy, and apart from their power winch failing once, there hasn’t been anything else that has thrown them off their journey.

Future Plans

They’re slow-cruisers and have sailed mostly around the United States and Bahamas, but are planning to head further afield in the next few years. Global circumnavigation? Perhaps!

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this beautiful couple?

➜ Build a business. Sell it. Go cruising!

Really – that’s it! And it’s exactly what I’m doing too.

Conclusion

I would say that Dave and Lisa are one of the smallest influencers on YouTube, but get a HUGE tick of approval from me. Their videos are simple and without the click-bait drama to get views.

I really am looking forward to seeing where they go cruising in the near future.

Windtraveler: Are Brittany and Scott Divorced Now? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Windtraveler for 2023.

Over the last 7 years, I ended up reading a ton of Windtraveler’s blog posts to learn more about their story. This included their unfortunate sinking of their 2 boats, and the eventual hurricane.

I was really quite obsessed with Brittany’s writing style 😃

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Windtraveler afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ If Brittany and Scott got divorced

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Windtraveler FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

I can’t recall what the name of their current boat is.

Sadly, Windtraveler lost its two business boats. Both sunk and couldn’t be saved during Hurricane Irma, and without insurance coverage, their business went down overnight.

Crew Members

Scott Meyer (age 39)

Brittany Meyer (age 37)

They had 3 girls together, and the 2 youngest are twins.

Sadly, both Scott and Brittany divorced in 2019 after a challenging few years of raising 3 girls and running a business that took 60 hours/week from Scott’s life.

I think many of us expected this outcome…eventually.

They lacked family assistance and raising the girls took 200% of Brittany’s energy. It was very VERY taxing.

Brittany has since moved on and got a new relationship with an Australian called Jack, and recently, she gave birth to their baby girl! That’s her 4th daughter.

Scott and Brittany’s website (www.windtraveler.net) hasn’t been updated for the last couple of years and may have been abandoned.

The Boat

After losing the two charter vessels, they purchased a Hallberg-Rassy 46 and previously a Brewer 44.

Location

Scott and Brittany are still in the British Virgin Islands.

She lives on a boat while he lives in an apartment.

Past Cruising

They have done some coastal cruising before children, eventually settling into the British Virgin Islands once their daughters were born.

Affording It

Scott and Brittany didn’t come from rich parents, and thus, simply purchased an affordable yacht to get started. This happened long before the YouTube craze.

They then became one of the first – and eventually the biggest – bloggers on the scene, simply telling first-hand stories of the emotional toil that sailing has, especially with a young family on board.

They were able to qualify for bank loans to purchase their two charter vessels.

Net Worth

Windtraveler has a net worth of $270,000. They lost most of it in Hurricane Irma.

Making Loot

I’m not sure how well Brittany is getting on today or her ex-husband, Scott. If you know how she’s doing and if she created a new business, please reach out.

From all accounts, I imagine it would’ve been a struggle for them (and many others from the BVI’s) to rebuild their lives. Kids just make things all that much harder.

Collaborations

The only time I’ve seen the Windtraveler family on YouTube was on Paul and Sheryl’s channel from Distant Shores:

They were bloggers more than video creators, so it was refreshing to see them in real life.

Big Moments

During their epic journey, they have experienced:

➜ Multiple meltdowns due to cabin fever

➜ Building a business and sadly losing it all

➜ Brittany chose to file for divorce (expected)

One thing is for sure – they tried REALLY HARD to make this work. Most people wouldn’t put in 10% of what Scott and Brittany did to chase a better life in the tropics.

It wasn’t all doom-and-gloom either. They had some wonderful moments in their journey but weren’t afraid to hide the reality of cruising with kids.

Future Plans

Where to next? TBH, they haven’t updated anything for a while.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from the Windtraveler story?

➜ The journey is worth the risk

➜ Raising kids is hard, but worth it

➜ Be willing to plan for tomorrow

➜ You can rebuild from nothing

And of course, good things might not always last.

Conclusion

I always believe the universe conspires to make things right. That might sound too ‘out there’ but it’s clearly worked in this case.

Brittany has bounced back strong, and while her blog hasn’t really been updated, she has been active on Instagram and has the joy of raising another daughter, this time with an entire village behind her.

I certainly can’t wait to see what’s next!

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Folsom Ocean Views FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Leviosa

Oddly enough, they haven’t named their channel after their boat.

Crew Members

Charles Folsom (age 38)

Jes Laurent (age 35)

They have been together for 15 years and married for the last 10.

Radar and Phoenix are their dogs and the newest additions to the crew.

The Boat

Folsom Ocean Views owns a 2017 Leopard 40 catamaran. This is a very popular cruising catamaran and their specific boat has been built as an off-grid powerhouse.

Upgrades

Some upgrades include

➜ 1,675watts of solar panels paired with 9000aH of lithium batteries

➜ A 5000watt inverter and 6kw generator as a backup

➜ Airconditioning plus washer and dryer combo

➜ A Rainman water maker

➜ Zeus 3 AIS and radar

They are clearly aiming to live on this boat full-time and explore the world.

Location

They are currently in Mexico, specifically on Long Island:

Past Cruising

As they purchased their catamaran during the Pandemic, they weren’t able to explore all that much, but they have sailed around the Bahamas and United States.

Affording It

Both Charles and Jes worked full-time in the tech world, often working remotely as digital nomads before it became popular. With no kids, they were able to save up enough to travel extensively, and later, purchase their catamaran for cash.

Net Worth

YouTubers are often wealthier than us, both financially and in terms of freedom.

As of 2023, Folsom Ocean Views have a net worth of $570,000.

This is based on the value of their boat and online business.

Making Loot

Previously, they were both working full-time from their boat with US-based companies, as explained here:

However, Charles was recently made unemployed after working for a startup, and so they’ve had to pivot and make YouTube their primary income.

But how exactly? Well…

➜ They offer a basic Patreon account

➜ You can buy merchandise from them

➜ They run ads on their YouTube channel

➜ They use affiliate links on their site

Despite having a smaller channel, they are doing reasonably well income-wise, making around $4,200/month.

Collaborations

They haven’t really been featured on any other channels, but if you have seen them elsewhere, please let me know.

Big Moments

Throughout their journey, they have

➜ Experienced a hurricane

➜ Got their anchor stuck

➜ Having their watermaker die

➜ Dealing with some cabin fever

As they haven’t really ventured beyond the United States, their videos center around helping other couples get into cruising full-time. I highly recommend their channel if you’re new to living on board!

Future Plans

Where to next? Well, as international borders have opened, it’s likely that they’ll explore the Caribbean…then who knows? Perhaps they’ll head towards the South Pacific…and then here to Australia! 🙂

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this beautiful couple?

➜ You can live on board with dogs

➜ Working remotely is absolutely possible

➜ Be willing to do your own boat work

➜ Ensure you’re both up for the journey

And of course, prepare for the unexpected!

Conclusion

Despite their challenges, both Charles and Jes have rolled with the punches. Today they’re pushing hard through YouTube.

While they may never be as big as say La Vagabonde, they’re definitely helpful and share not just the lifestyle, but the tips and tools to make your liveaboard journey sustainable for the long-term.

And they have definitely created my type of channel. 🙂

Create Your Own Cruising Freedom

Hey! 😃 it’s Joshua again…

I’ve been very inspired by Folsom Ocean Views and their travels…

Some say I’m obsessed, but sailing the world is my childhood dream.

They’re living the dream, but that dream isn’t actually that far away.

I mentioned earlier about discovering the #1 cruising business model.

With this exciting opportunity, I’ll be able to:

➜ Generate a sustainable full-time income through learning basic skills

➜ Fund the purchase of my first sailing catamaran without any loans

➜ Do it without selling to friends and family (I found a better solution!)

➜ Share my lifetime passion for sailing, cruising and global adventures

Project Atticus: What Is Their Net Worth and Sailboat? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Project Atticus for 2023.

Over the last 3 years, I have spent so many hours watching and researching everything I could about Project Atticus to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Project Atticus 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Project Atticus afforded their boat

➜ Their income streams and net worth

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ Ways you can build assets like them

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

Project Atticus FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Atticus II

Crew Members

Jordan Wicht (age 35)

Desiree Wicht (age 34)

They met through being crew members on superyachts

Captain Oso also joins their crew.

There will be an additional crew member joining in 2022. Yes, Jordan and Desiree are having a baby!

The Boat

Project Atticus has a 1964 Allied Seawind 30 (FL 4787 NK) which was Atticus I, plus a 1997 Pacific Seacraft 40 which became Atticus II.

Upgrades

This boat had an extensive refit including lithium batteries, new sails and new solar.

Location

They are currently in The Azores before they head for the Med:

Past Cruising

They have sailed through the United States and the Mediterranean.

Who knows what will happen now that Desiree is pregnant. More than likely (as many other YouTubers do) they’ll have 3 to 6 months off, batch some videos up and then resume sailing again.

Affording It

Both Jordan and Desiree worked hard on superyachts and were able to keep their expenses very low.

Through personal savings, they were able to purchase both their boats for cash, without any need for bank loans.

Net Worth

YouTubers are often doing well for themselves as content creators.

Today in 2023, after years of work, Project Atticus is worth $510,000.

This estimation is based on their boat’s value and personal savings.

Making Loot

Previously, they had to fly away from their boat to freelance on other boats as crew, but today, they have mastered the art of online income streams.

These include:

➜ Affiliate links to yachting gear

➜ Running their own Patreon account

➜ Numerous brand sponsorships

➜ Allowing ads on their channel

They treat YouTube content creation as a serious business which makes them around $5,700/month. Remarkable!

Collaborations

Despite the remarkably large size of their YouTube channel, I haven’t seen them sailing with anyone else.

They have met up with various other YouTubers at the Miami Boat show. This included David Shih, Beau and Brandy Sailing, Odd Life Crafting and Sailing Sweet Ruca.

I think a collab between them and Kristina’s travels could work well.

Big Moments

Some notable experiences in Atticus’ journey include:

➜ Almost being boarded by pirates in Nicaraguan Banks.

➜ Being approached by strangers while sailing

➜ Going through multiple cabin-fever experiences

Fortunately, nothing really that bad has happened to them.

Future Plans

Where to next? Now that the boat is ready to sail, they’re planning to see the entire world!

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this ambitious couple?

➜ Do it all while you’re young

➜ Be willing to make mistakes

➜ Learn to do your own boat work

➜ Harness the power of the internet

And of course, find a supportive spouse to join you! 🤩

Conclusion

Clearly, Jordan and Desiree have captivated the hearts of many, including myself. Their projects are ambitious but they’re willing to get the job done for their dream.

Now my question to you – are you prepared to put in the work…

The Cruising Kiwis: What Catamaran Do They Sail? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on The Cruising Kiwis for 2023.

Over the last 3 years, I have spent 57 hours watching and researching everything I could about The Cruising Kiwis to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Rob and Rachel’s Australian journey 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How The Cruising Kiwis afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ If their catamaran is a bluewater cruiser

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Kiwis FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Javelot

Crew Members

Rob Hamill (age 49)

Rachel Hamill (age 47)

Finn (19), Declan (17) and Ivan (14) are their children who often focus on creating the videos. This is one of the most raw videos they have created:

The Boat

The Cruising Kiwis on YouTube sail on their 2019 Fountaine Pajot Belize 43 with an owner’s cabin floorplan.

Upgrades

Upgrades to their boat include AIS, chartplotter and water maker.

Location

The Cruising Kiwis are currently circumnavigating Australia.

Past Cruising

They have sailed through New Zealand and Australia, although Rob had won a rowing race in the past.

Affording It

Rob and Rachel worked hard for decades

Net Worth

The Cruising Kiwis have a net worth of $1,570,000 based on their boat valuation and personal savings.

Making Loot

The Cruising Kiwis aren’t trying to make money on YouTube, as they create their content for inspiration.

But they would like to continue crusing, and so:

➜ They offer a small Patreon account

➜ They sometimes allow YouTube to run ads

They’re only making around $900/month, unlike other channels that absolutely ‘clean up’ through creating videos.

They could monetize their channel so much more by adding referral links and creating sponsorship agreements or even offering to consult for those seeking to purchase a boat.

Collaborations

While The Cruising Kiwis do have a small channel, it hasn’t stopped them from collaborating with these giants:

Sailing Zatara

Expedition Drenched

I look forward to seeing them connect with other Australian cruising families.

Big Moments

Excuse the pun, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for this wonderful family. Rob got a fish hook in his foot once, but that’s small compared to the rest:

While sailing, they have experienced the WA Government trying to catch them out for swimming with whales which was legal for private vessels. More details here:

They also had a sketchy entrance into Noosa Heads. I’ve struggled on that bar crossing too so I don’t blame them.

In addition, in 1978, Rob’s older brother Kerry was unfortunately attacked by a Khmer Rouge gunboat, along with his two friends.

Sadly, they were captured, tortured and eventually murdered. Part of the Cruising Kiwis journey is to re-trace Kerry’s route.

More details about that story here:

There is also a movie that tells the story.

Future Plans

Now that the circumnavigation of Australia is almost over, they’re planning to head into SE Asia.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this heart-driven cruising family?

➜ You can definitely cruise with older kids

➜ Find the right catamaran for your needs

➜ Work through the challenges along the way

➜ You’ll find fellow kid-boats along the way

➜ Make your cruising a journey worth telling

And of course, take it easy on the waters!

Conclusion

The Cruising Kiwis have absolutely inspired me to go sail around Australia. They’re down-to-earth and despite their smaller audience, share way more wisdom than channels 10x the size.

I certainly can’t wait to see more!
