Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Expedition Drenched for 2024.

Over the last several years, I have spent many hours watching and researching everything I could about Expedition Drenched to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with their sailing, especially their adventures, especially in Australia 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Expedition Drenched afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ Juice details about Nerea, Amy and more

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

Expedition Drenched FAQs (2024)

Boat Name

S/V Sylfia

The name of the vessel comes from the original owner, Bernard. He combined the names of his two children – Sylvan and Sophia – who grew up in New Zealand.

Crew Members

Captain Nate Porter (age 34) owns the ship.

He was previously on S/V Delos for 5 months and found his dream boat literally the day he got off Brian’s boat.

From Season 1:

Nerea Basque (age 29)

They both left to purchase their own boat which ultimately become shipwrecked. More details down below.

Aitor (age 31) who is from Basque Country, Spain

Molly Johnson (age 28) who is from Cornwall, England

Chloe Deboosere (age 34) who is from Belgium

Will Keuppens (34) who is from Belgium

(Yes, Will is dating Chloe)

Oceane (age 31) from France

Amir da Sun (age 28) from Israel

Lindsay Hull (age 26) from Auckland, New Zealand

Brett (age 28) from South Australia (where I’m originally from too!)

Émilie (age 33) from Montréal, Canada (my favorite crew member!)

Dee Porter (age 59) who is from Salt Lake City, Utah. This is Nate’s mother. She was an avid dive instructor which is why Nate is so keen to head underwater

Peanut (their pet pig) from Vanuatu. He sailed with them sometimes but eventually had to be rehomed.

Phillip Blaszak (age 28) from Brisbane, Australia

John (age 66) from the Solomon Islands. Chief John was essentially their tour guide in the Solomon Islands but was one of the most likable guys ever.

Patrick (age 35) from Salt Lake City and was a friend of Nate’s.

Sylvan is the son of the original owner and builder and has crewed on the boat in the early days (2019).

Season 2:

Amy Lawson (age 21) from Brisbane, Australia.

Gloria Mcalister (age 30) from Western Australia

Here is a video with some of the latest crew members from the current season 3:

The Boat

Expedition Drenched has a custom-built 75-foot steel ketch. It’s a ship rather than a yacht. It’s one of a kind with a 68-foot mast you can actually climb.

She is a special boat and nothing else like I’ve come across.

It has a 4,700-litre water tank which is remarkable!

Upgrades

Nate and his beautiful crew have upgraded the yacht with:

➜ A ton of solar panels (88-gigawatts…lol)

➜ A watermaker

➜ Dive compressors

They have focused on the journey rather than boatwork.

Location

Expedition Drenched were exploring the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and recently got down to Sydney.

They are up to date on their video production, with this being one of my favorite sails:

Past Cruising

So far, they have sailed in the Caribbean, South Pacific, Australia and SE Asia.

Affording It

Did Nate have rich parents? Not really. His mom is as humble as they come.

Nate knew the value of hard work. He kept his living expenses very low while working as a dive instructor and other freelance jobs and saved a ton.

Net Worth

As of 2024, my best estimate is that Expedition Drenched’s net worth is $470,000 based on the value of their yacht.

Making Loot

They make $6,200/month on YouTube through:

➜ Links to the sailing gear they use and recommend

➜ Selling their own Expedition Drenched merchandise

➜ They allow YouTube to run ads on their channel

➜ They also have a Patreon account and appreciate PayPal donations

They do take their video production and channel seriously.

Collaborations

As I mentioned earlier, Nate was on Delos for almost 6 months.

I have seen Expedition Drenched featured with:

Sailing Zatara

Gone With The Wynns

Unlike most other YouTubers who prefer to stay private, Expedition Drenched offers meetups so you can meet the crew in person!

Big Moments

Some epic experiences in their journey include:

➜ Finding human remains on an island

➜ Come across multiple shipwrecks

➜ Breaking into an abandoned resort

➜ Racing to the hospital in a storm as Patrick got an infection and needed antibiotics

Also, Oceane had to leave the boat after a broken arm initially believed to be a fracture. Her arm got caught in a fuller. She eventually returned to the boat with a smile.

Nerea eventually lost everything in a shipwreck near Rottnest Island, Australia. Celia Perez arranged a GoFundMe campaign which tells more about the story.

Future Plans

Where to next? Expedition Drenched are sailing around Australia and are planning to explore into SE Asia.

They have no desire to return to normal jobs or normal lives. The ocean is their home.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this awesome channel?

➜ Be willing to get your hands dirty

➜ You can definitely sail with a big crew

➜ Aim to be as resourceful as possible

➜ Find someone to join you on the journey

And of course, be humble and real.

Conclusion

Expedition Drenched has taken over Delos as a prominent sailing channel with a large, young crew. Their boat is next-level and their lifestyle is simply beautiful.

I can’t wait to see what’s to come!

The Paper Boat Project: Who is Stefan’s New Girlfriend? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

This is the definitive guide on The Paper Boat Project for 2023.

Over the last 2 years, I have spent countless hours watching and researching everything I could about The Paper Boat Project to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with Stefan since he was with Audrey 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How The Paper Boat Project afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ Who is his new beautiful girlfriend

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

The Paper Boat Project FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

They don’t have a boat but are looking for one.

Currently, they’re working on other people’s boats, doing boat deliveries and charter work now that Stefan is a YachtMaster with his offshore qualifications.

Crew Members

Stefan Heiberg (age 39) also known as Captain Leeu from South Africa.

Oliwia Z (age 29) is from Warsaw, Poland, who Stefan calls the ‘Polish Princess’ and boy….he isn’t wrong. 🤩

Previously, Stefan was popular on Sailing Miss Lone Star.

That wasn’t without controversy though. I noticed in her comments that some people felt that Audrey was manipulating him, and she has since deleted some of the episodes.

It’s great to see him on a new channel and on new frontiers.

As one of his commentators has said “You are in a way better place than before, no more bimbo just good honest comments

And as far as Audrey being caught stealing, it was only Audrey that was found guilty. Stefan had NOTHING to do with it. He’s just always come across as an honest guy in my eyes.

The Boat

To be updated once Stefan buys his boat.

Upgrades

Again, to be updated.

Location

Where is Stefan?

According to YouTube, they are in the Mediterranean while being only a few weeks behind on uploading their latest videos.

Past Cruising

Stefan has sailed the Caribbean, United States and now the Mediterranean.

Affording It

Was Stefan rich? Kind of. He worked hard in the world of investment banking and corporate for several years. He saved up enough to purchase some boats and sail the world.

Net Worth

The Paper Boat Project has a net worth of $450,000.

Making Loot

Stefan makes his money through:

➜ Running his own investments

➜ His Patreon and PayPal donations

➜ Using referral links to Amazon

He hasn’t mastered the art of YouTube yet and the bulk of his active income is through being hired by owners to sail their yachts.

Collaborations

Apart from Aubrey’s channel, has he been featured elsewhere? Not really but he is close friends with Sailing Uma.

Big Moments

The biggest moment in his journey was leaving the ‘trainwreck’ behind (not my words, but those of many viewers) around 2 years ago:

So far his channel has been able fun, freedom and fulfillment rather than click-bait content.

Future Plans

Stefan is still looking for a yacht with his Polish Princess.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from him?

➜ Always chase your dreams

➜ Get your charter boat qualifications

➜ Be wary of who you sail with

➜ Hunt for the perfect boat

And find a beautiful mermaid to join you on the journey!

Conclusion

In Stefan’s words “You can achieve anything you set your mind to!” and I totally agree.

Go and make your dreams of crossing oceans happen!

Sailing Triteia: What Happened To Camille? Did They Divorce? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Sailing Triteia for 2023.

Over the last 2 years, I have spent 57 hours watching and researching everything I could about Sailing Triteia to learn more about their story.

(Yes, I really am *that* obsessed with James’ simple channel 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Sailing Triteia afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ Where is Camille and why did they divorce

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

A business model which can allow me to:

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Sailing Triteia FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Triteia

Crew Members

James Frederick (age 35)

Camille Frederick (age 33) left James recently as she wanted a different life. The divorce has been finalized with more details below.

James is now just sailing with his Australian cattle dog known as Mister Steady but Kimberly Wood has made an appearance in some recent videos, as had Sarah.

Camielle Divorce

The divorce was the most controversial thing to have happened to James from Sailing Triteia. While on his trip from LA to Hawaii, he received a long email from Camielle “It’s over, I’m gone!”

Strategic timing for her, worst timing for him.

You can see hints that Camielle was going to leave James eventually, particularly in her final appearance on his YouTube channel:

Where is Camielle today? No one really knows but she is safe and well. Most people didn’t like her on the channel as she seemed..cold.

Anyway, back to sailing around the world. 🙂

The Boat

Sailing Triteia has a 1965 Alberg 30 sloop. It took him 4 years to refit this and make it ready for world cruising. You can view a boat tour here:

Upgrades

What upgrades has James done? A ton actually. It’s worth looking through his playlist on YouTube, particularly the electronics and Renogy solar panels in recent videos.

Location

S/V Triteia is currently in the South Pacific.

You can track his vessel’s location via Predict Wind.

Past Cruising

James has sailed from the United States to Hawaii, but has also explored the Mediterranean in the past

Affording It

He’s clearly not rich by any means, and paid only a few thousand for his yacht which he restored on weekends while working a full-time job.

Net Worth

YouTubers are typically wealthier than us, but not in this case…

As of 2023, Sailing Triteia has a net worth of $125,000 which has based on his boat value and business income.

This might appear surprisingly small, but James cares very little about wealth and instead chooses to pursue freedom and new frontiers.

Making Loot

Does James upload videos to YouTube for money? Much like other YouTubers, yes, but James is way more knowledgeable and down-to-earth than 90% of them.

(Yes, I am looking at you…million-dollar catamaran owners in bikinis! 😉)

James is quite casual with his channel and makes around $2,700/month which is enough to keep his dream alive.

His income streams include:

➜ Allowing ads to run on his YouTube channel

➜ Accepting donations via Patreon and PayPal

➜ Sales of his books (which I highly recommend reading!)

Occasionally he’ll link to some of the gear he has used on his boat.

Collaborations

Has he been featured on other channels? Not really.

Sam Holmes Sailing is a big fan of his channel, and there are many synergies between Sam and James.

James did a special episode with the owners of VIDA MIA in Hawaii which was a beautiful boat…I must say!

He was also featured recently in the popular Cruising World Magazine:

Big Moments

Sailing hasn’t been an easy feat for James, especially in an older boat and has had some incidents along the way.

His worst experience was getting stranded 1,000 miles from shore due to losing his rudder. James has written a 258-page book about this which is worth reading: https://svtriteia.bigcartel.com

Future Plans

James is heading from LA to Hawaii. From here he will head to Australia via the South Pacific, and we’ll definitely welcome him with open arms!

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this man-on-a-mission? A ton!

➜ Buy a simple boat to cruise on

➜ Learn to do your own boat work

➜ Be willing to roll with the punches

➜ The cruising community is here to help

And above all else, make the most of every day!

Conclusion

James is an inspiration to many (including myself) to make our cruising dreams happen. He’s willing to do what others won’t to see the world and share his wisdom.

I certainly never want him to stop sailing, and would love you to start your own adventures soon too!

Alluring Arctic Sailing FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Arktika

Previously he owned another boat called S/Y Sylvia which was a Beneteau Idylle 11.50.

They have recently purchased a new boat for $57,000:

Crew Members

Juho Karhu (age 33)

Sohvi (age 27)

I’m not sure about her last name.

The Boat

The YouTube channel ‘Alluring Arctic’ has 1984 47-feet long

It has an aluminum hull.

The boat took around 2.5 months to restore from its former glory.

Upgrades

They have upgraded their cold-weather sailboat with:

➜ Repainting the hulls

➜ A ton of electronic gear that had to be upgraded

Location

According to Instagram, they are in Iceland.

According to YouTube, they are also in Iceland.

This means they are currently up to date on videos.

Past Cruising

So far Juho has explored in Norway, Iceland and Finland.

Affording It

Was Juho rich? Not really. He simply worked hard for several years to afford his boat. He paid $75,000 but had to put in a lot of work to bring it up to its former glory.

In addition, he’s leasing the boat and doesn’t own it 100%. There are other owners involved so he doesn’t sail it full-time.

Net Worth

Alluring Arctic has a net worth of $310,000 as of 2022.

Making Loot

He doesn’t treat his YouTube channel as much of a business, but does offer a Patreon subscription and makes some income through running YouTube ads.

Juho and his girlfriend make around $1,700 per month via the channel, and created a video sharing his sources:

Collaborations

Have they sailed with other YouTubers? Not really, but they have featured Erik Aanderaa where they did a boat tour with him.

I’ve also seen Sailing Uma commenting on their channel so they’re definitely plans.

Big Moments

Some cool moments in his journey include:

➜ Having to haul out as they were slowly sinking

➜ Getting stopped by a Baby Orca while sailing

➜ Finding whale bones and lots of trash

➜ And of course, finding the love of his life

…and I’m sure there are plenty more cool experiences to come!

Future Plans

Where will they explore? Chances are that Juho and his girlfriend will stay in the colder climates so we’re unlikely to see them in the Caribbean or South Pacific anytime soon. 🙂

Key Takeaways

There is a lot we can learn from this channel:

➜ Cruising doesn’t need to be done in the tropics

➜ Buy a reasonable yacht that you can afford

➜ Be willing to learn the hard skills in the field

➜ Find a beautiful mermaid to join you on board 🙂

And above all else, be patient!

Conclusion

I’m obsessed with watching their YouTube updates and can’t wait to watch more!

Erik Aanderaa: Wife, Boat, Net Worth and Earnings (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Erik Aanderaa for 2023.

Over the last 6 years, I have spent many fine hours watching and researching everything I could about Erik Aanderaa to learn more about his sailing story.

I’m a fan of his YouTube channel, just like you!

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Erik Aanderaa afforded his boat

➜ How he makes his money today

➜ What boat does he actually sail on

➜ Why he’s missing from YouTube

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Erik Aanderaa FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Go which he calls Tessie

One of the coolest boat names I have come across!

Crew Members

Erik Aanderaa (age 39) from Denmark.

Very little is known about his girlfriend or family.

The Boat

Erik has a Contessa 35.

Upgrades

He is constantly upgrading his boat, with some notable equipping being:

➜ New 1500W inverter

➜ Webasto 4Kw diesel heater

➜ New Chartplotter and radar detector

➜ New Volvo Penta DE-40 engine and engine batteries

➜ He even has his own Nespresso coffee machine on board his boat

His channel focuses a lot on sailing (mainly in rough conditions) rather than boat work or repairs.

Location

He mostly sails in Iceland.

In recent times, Erik Aanderaa has opted to only produce 1 video per month to maintain his high-quality content. He uses a ‘no bullshit, just sailing’ philosophy and avoids all the click-bait drama and controversies of other channels.

This was one of his most recent videos:

This has caused some people to speculate that he isn’t sailing anymore or has gotten in trouble somehow – or even worse – gone missing.

Past Cruising

He has explored the Mediterranean, North Sea and the North Atlantic sea. He has also been a crew in multiple yacht races.

Affording It

Erik’s career was in the nautical industry and he saved

Net Worth

Today, Erik Aanderaa’s net worth is $570,000.

Making Loot

He takes his video production and storytelling seriously and makes money on YouTube through:

➜ Affiliate links to NordVPN

➜ Selling his own merchandise

➜ Running a Patreon account

➜ Allowing YouTube to put ads on his videos

In total, he makes around $4,500/month.

Collaborations

I haven’t seen him featured on any other channels, but he has been featured in many highly-regarded sailing magazines such as Yachting Monthly.

Big Moments

[Best and Worst Moments in Cruising]

➜ He ran aground once on the rocks

➜ He got hypothermia due to wearing the wrong gloves (a key reason why he now has a diesel heater)

➜ He’s pushed through multiple bad storms

Future Plans

Where to next? Well, he’s more than likely heading south to Antarctica at some stage.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this legendary sailor?

➜ Prepare for the worst

➜ Always trim your sails

➜ Keep warm on cold passages

➜ Let your boat seteer itself

And most importantly, always stay dry!

Conclusion

Erik is very unique within the sailing community. Unlike those seeking attention, he simply wants to sail and share his adventures on the camera.

He deserves a lot more subscribers for his ethos, passion and pure sailing experiences. I certainly can’t wait for this next batch of videos to go live!

So much so that I’ve hit the bell notification on YouTube, and that’s extremely rare for me to do. 🙂 In the meantime…

Odd Life Crafting: Roberta’s Age, Earnings and Net Worth (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Odd Life Crafting for 2023.

Over the last 2 years, I have spent 30+ hours watching and researching everything I could about Odd Life Crafting to learn more about their story and unique choice of a sailing vessel.

(Yes, watching for that many hours means I really am *that* obsessed with Duca and Roberta 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Odd Life Crafting afforded their boat

➜ How they make their money today

➜ What boat do they have and its upgrades

➜ If Roberta offers uncensored footage

➜ How you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

The Cruising Freedom Author

Ahoy, Matey! I’m Joshua from Australia.

I’ve built the perfect business to sail the world.

➜ Own a catamaran debt-free

➜ Go for weeks without WIFI

➜ Create semi-passive income

➜ Inspire others to dream big

But more on that later… 🙂

Odd Life Crafting FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Odd

Yes, this is the strangest boat name I’ve ever come across! 😅

Crew Members

Duca (Eduardo) Cassol (age 38)

Roberta Montibeller (age 39)

The Boat

Odd Life Crafting owns a 1991 Dinieper Tropic 1200 which is a 44ft steel sailboat. This boat sat in a yard and was neglected for over 22 years before being discovered by this energetic couple.

Check out the tour before they started working on it:

They got themselves committed to the project and the rest is history. Today they’re sailing the world.

Prior to this, they owned 2 previous small sailboats.

Upgrades

They have done a ton of boat work since and replaced almost everything in their epic journey on YouTube.

It wasn’t easy but has paid off well. I highly recommend watching their complete build series, and my list of upgrades would require multiple pages… 🙂

Location

They are currently in Rio de Janeiro after having left São Paulo, Brazil.

This means they are currently a week or two behind on their video production as it’s been challenging to find reliable WIFI.

Past Cruising

They haven’t been sailing all that much, but have just started to explore Brazil.

Affording It

How did they find the money? They both worked hard and as they lived a simple life and had no children, they were able to save up enough to purchase their project yacht a few years ago and get to work.

They put a ton of sweat equity into the build, learned much along the way and inspired the YouTube community.

Net Worth

YouTubers often become wealthier by the day.

As of 2023, Odd Life Crafting has a net worth of $580,000. This is based on the value of their yacht, their personal savings and business income.

I imagine that numerous boat manufacturers would be willing to offer them a ‘free’ boat that Sailing La Vagabonde did in 2017.

Duca and Roberta are extremely knowledgeable and are committed to their mission.

Making Loot

Odd Life Crafting makes a remarkable $11,000/month on YouTube through simply:

➜ Allowing ads to be shown on their channel

➜ Providing referral links to all their camera gear and parts

➜ Selling their own Odd Life Crafting merchandise via Teespring

➜ Accepting Patreon and PayPal donations from their loyal fans

➜ And finally, accepting brand sponsorships and affiliate links to their sailboat gear

They have absolutely mastered the art of making an income through YouTube, and many channels could learn a thing or two about their secrets.

Collaborations

Have they shared the spotlight on YouTube with any other channels? Absolutely! They have met up with:

Expedition Evans

Sailing Zephyr

Sailing Parlay Revival (they have a ton of synergy with Colin!)

Sailing Avocet

Sailing Zingaro

Monday Never

MJ Sailing

Project Atticus

SV Delos

Cruisers Academy

Harbors Unknown

➜ Sailing Dark Angel

Out Chasing Stars

David Shih

➜ Sailboat Story

Sailing The Far Side

Calico Skies Sailing

They met most of these cruisers at the Annapolis Boat Show in late 2021.

So in terms of who they’ve actually hung out AND sailed together with:

Taylor’s Travels

Tula’s Endless Summer

Sailing Yabá

➜ Chicama Sailing

They have also been inspired by S/V Rapunzel:

Big Moments

Things haven’t been easy but they’ve worked through the lowest of the lows, including:

➜ Breaking their quadrant

➜ Replacing their mast

➜ Running aground (making them true sailors now!)

➜ Having several meltdowns

They have continued to inspire many people to restore their own abandoned boats and see the world.

Future Plans

Where to next? They are planning to explore South America before cruising into the South Pacific.

They have discussed having children on more than one occasion. I believe they’ll make wonderful parents and their yacht is capable to handle 1-2 children.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this wise and ambitious couple?

➜ Be resourceful in what you have

➜ It’s never easy, but it’s worth it

➜ Don’t let the years slip on by

➜ Find a partner who’ll 200% support you

And most important, don’t rush yourself. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. 😊

Conclusion

Duca and Roberta deserve every sundowner, sunrise and to be welcomed into every port. They have taken on a project that very few people wouldn’t even consider…and have COMPLETELY knocked it out of the park!

Much of the cruising community praises their work ethic and dedication to their restoration project. I certainly can’t wait to see what is to come!

Salt And Tar FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Rediviva and S/V Button 2.

Crew Members

Garrett Jolly (age 35)

Ruth Jolly (age 34)

They have been together since they were 15 and even bought their first sailboat together when they were 17. These two certainly are sticking together for life!

The Boat

George Buehler 40-foot yacht. Only a few of these were produced.

They previously owned a 1946 36-foot Johnna Hanna Ketch amongst several other classic yachts.

Upgrades

Upgrades to their project boat include:

➜ New engine and electrical systems

And a ton of carpentry work.

Location

They live in the United States although I’m not sure which marina they are currently in. Their boat work is almost done!

This is one of their most recent videos:

Past Cruising

They haven’t really wailed all that much, focusing instead on their boat-build project.

Affording It

How did they afford to sail? Well, they saved up as much as they could and simply got to work.

Net Worth

As of 2023, Salt And Tar have a net worth of $275,000.

Making Loot

They make a part-time income through YouTube by:

➜ Selling their own merchandise

➜ Running ads on their YouTube channel

➜ Gaining donations via Patreon and PayPal

I estimate this is making them around $2,700/month and a lot goes back into their project work.

Collaborations

Have they collaborated with anyone? Not really. I haven’t seen them on any other channels, but I do see some synergy between them and Living With The Tide.

If you’re looking for a similar channel to follow, then I’d highly recommend that one!

Big Moments

There haven’t been any accidents, fires, click-bait drama or anything else on their channel. They don’t do anything silly to attract views and simply get on with their boat jobs. This explains why they are so popular on YouTube.

Future Plans

Where will they go sailing now? Well, they’re planning to sail around the world and will start in the Caribbean.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this skillful and ambitious couple?

➜ You CAN restore old boats

➜ Be willing to learn the tools

➜ Things don’t always go to plan

➜ Find someone who supports you

And of course, don’t take things so seriously. I think that’s helped them get through the most challenging elements of their boat build.

Conclusion

I can’t wait to see what’s beyond the horizon for these two. Whatever adventures await…they 200% deserve it after all this hard work! Absolute legends in my eyes.

Expedition Evans FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Sea Pass

Crew Members

Brett Evans (age 32)

Jade Evans (age 28)

They have been married for several years.

The Boat

Expedition Evans has a 2008 Beneteau 49 (registration number 4JH4-TE) that they salvaged.

It didn’t have a mast as it was damaged and they bought it at an insurance auction.

Upgrades

There have been many upgrades and repairs that have been necessary on their boat which included a new mast and electronics. Hard work certainly pays off!

Location

They were working on their boat in Miami, Florida but recently arrived in The Bahamas:

This means they are currently slightly behind on their videos.

Past Cruising

Much of their channel has been focused on their boat restoration project, so they haven’t really explored more than the United States for a shakedown cruise.

Affording It

Did Brett and Jade come from rich parents? Definitely not. Brett worked as a pilot while Jade was a photographer. They didn’t have much money but fortunately were able to win their yacht at auction. They did have to put a lot of sweat equity into restoring their boat from the ground up and something that most people aren’t willing to do.

Net Worth

YouTubers typically do well for themselves.

As of 2023, Expedition Evans has amassed a net worth of $720,000.

This is based on their boat valuation, personal savings and business income.

Making Loot

How does Expedition Evans make money? Well, there are several ways:

➜ Referrals to life insurance quotes

➜ Using Amazon links to the gear they use

➜ Selling their own awesome merchandise

➜ Donations via Patreon and PayPal

From this, they make around $5,700/month.

Collaborations

I haven’t seen them on any other YouTube channels but they remind me a lot of Sailing Parlay Revival and Sailing Uma.

Big Moments

Apart from the retrofit, incidents in their journey include:

➜ Experiencing a boat fire with Sailing Naida

➜ Getting caught in a lightning storm in their

➜ Having multiple meltdowns due to boat work

The bigger challenges are yet to come on the ocean for these two. 🙂

Future Plans

Where to next? Well, now that the boat is officially ready, they plan on sailing the Caribbean and later, the South Pacific.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this ambitious couple?

➜ Life is so short so make the most of today

➜ The cheapest boats are those that are damaged

➜ Make yourself willing to get your hands dirty

➜ You CAN work remotely, starting today

And for the gentlemen…find a beautiful mermaid just like Jade. 😍

Conclusion

I absolutely adore these two! They work so well together in their episodes and I can’t wait to see what’s on the horizon.

Adventures Of An Old Sea Dog: What Type of Boat? (2023)

Everything You Always Wanted To Know

Joshua Smith

Founder and Editor at Cruising Freedom

This is the definitive guide on Adventures Of An Old Sea Dog for 2023.

Over the last 15 years, I have spent 70+ hours watching and researching everything I could about Barry’s channel to learn more about his story.

(Yes, he has been on YouTube for THAT long 😃)

If you wanted to know:

➜ How Barry afforded his unique sailboat

➜ How he makes his money today

➜ What boat does he have and its upgrades

➜ Where is going to sail to next

➜ And how you can start crossing oceans

Then you’ve definitely come to the right place.

Before we start, a quick introduction from me…

Adventures Of An Old Sea Dog FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V White Shadow

Crew Members

Barry Perrins (age 61) who is originally from the UK

The Boat

Adventures Of An Old Sea Dog has a 2004 Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36.

Upgrades

He has upgraded his yacht extensively and shares a lot of his knowledge on his channel. He’s modified the coach roof and I won’t take any more of his limelight, so I highly recommend checking out his upgrades and repairs video collection.

Location

Barry is in Fiji and is doing most of his sailing solo these days.

Past Cruising

Where has he sailed? Pretty much around the world. He has had some epic adventures and has taken the audience along for the ride.

Affording It

Barry worked hard for many years to afford his yacht, although it didn’t cost all that much. He wanted to have a safe buffer in the bank account.

Net Worth

As of 2023, Adventures Of An Old Sea Dog has a net worth of $350,000.

Making Loot

He makes YouTube his part-time income through:

➜ Running a Patreon account

➜ Allowing ads on his channel

My estimation is that he’s making around $2,200/month on the platform. He could monetize his channel so much more by using referral links and gaining sponsors.

Collaborations

Has he been spotted on other channels? I haven’t seen him anywhere but he met the legendary Captain Fatty Goodlander around 4 years ago.

Big Moments

Moments in his journey include:

➜ Coming across a yacht wreck

➜ Having a fire on board

➜ Sailing single-handed to numerous companies

➜ Coming across many beautiful women

And of course, experiencing lots of sail, wind, rain, hail and sunshine!

Future Plans

Barry is heading for Australia soon and we’ll be welcoming him with open arms!

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this legend?

➜ You don’t need to spruce out on a great boat

➜ Avoid all the glitz and glamour of YouTube

➜ Be resourceful enough to do your own boat work

➜ Cruising full-time is cheaper than you might think

And above all else, find that special mermaid to join you!

Conclusion

Barry is considered to be iconic within the cruising community and for good reason – he’s down to earth and makes firm decisions as the captain of his own vessel.

He avoids all the fancy editing and slick camera equipment, and simply tells his story for those (like me) that’ll pay attention.

His demographic, mostly people who actually want to go cruising full-time, appreciate his storytelling and authenticity on and off the camera.

I certainly can’t wait to see what’s coming on the horizon for his journey. He doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon!

Taylor’s Travels FAQs (April 2023)

Boat Name

S/V Sea Gypsy

Crew Members

Taylor Francis (age 32) is originally from Elora, Ontario, Canada.

She has been dating Kiki Terrels (age 35) for several months and now considers him to be her boyfriend.

Needless to say, that recent announcement broke the hearts of many single men.

She was originally on S/V Doodles and didn’t start her own channel until the Pandemic started. She blew up very quickly as many people knew her from Bobby’s channel and she was a fan favorite!

The Boat

Taylor Francis today owns a 1994 Catalina Morgan 38 which she sails with friends, family and now her recent boyfriend.

Previous to this, she owned a 1978 Tanzer 26. She sold that yacht soon after to go sailing on S/V Doodles.

Upgrades

She has upgraded her current boat with:

➜ 2 new Battle Born lithium batteries

➜ 3000w inverter and solar charge controller

She successfully ran a GoFundMe campaign to get a new engine ($14,000) and have it installed ($5,000) through just 134 donors. It’s clear that she has massive influence.

Location

Taylor is currently in the Dominican Republic.

This means she is currently a few weeks behind on her videos.

Past Cruising

Taylor has sailed in:

➜ United States and Canada

➜ Caribbean, USVI and Bahamas

➜ The Mediterranean

Affording It

Taylor made her money as an influencer and travel blogger. Bobby likely gave her a small salary and she saved most of it to buy her own yacht and eventually kick-start her own channel.

Net Worth

As of June 2022, Taylor’s Travels has a net worth of $770,000. This is based upon her boat valuation and global influence. Many sailing brands have reached out to her for collaborations and the attention she receives is perfect for brand placement.

Making Loot

Taylor has been blessed by the YouTube Gods and now has more than 200,000 subscribers with just 40 videos.

She monetizes her videos by:

➜ Running ads on her YouTube channel

➜ Earning from her Patreon subscribers

➜ Selling her own adventure merchandise

➜ She also accepts donations via PayPal

In total, she makes around $4,800/month on YouTube which funds her travels.

Collaborations

I have seen Taylor Francis on the following YouTube channels:

Sailing Doodles, although she wasn’t dating Bobby

S/V Delos where she recently spent several weeks

Odd Life Couple who also have an older boat

➜ I am definitely looking forward to seeing her on Sailing La Vagabonde in the near future.

She is very unique and it’s hard to compare her to anyone else.

Big Moments

She hasn’t had any unnecessary drama. It’s mostly been bikinis and cool stories, and it’s seriously hard to click away… 😉

Future Plans

Where to next? Her boat is having some work done to it (including an engine replacement) so she is sailing with Delos for a little while.

Key Takeaways

What can we learn from this beautiful soul?

➜ Tell a story that resonates with your audience

➜ Don’t be afraid to buy a simple yacht for now

➜ Be willing to learn as much as you can from YT

➜ Go small and go now. ‘Someday’ never comes

And of course, have a ton of fun out there!

Conclusion

Taylor has been a gift to the sailing community. She’s warm, authentic and isn’t afraid to go out on her own.

Her new boyfriend is seriously lucky and we can’t wait to see their adventure unfold in the future.
